Um...

Real truck.
Real chassis.
Stiff Unibody
5-Star Safety
Tall
And honestly, it's not really as small as it seems... it's actually kinda big. It just looks small.

After seeing some of the accidents on here i agree. Two forum members have had t-bone accidents this year, they drove home with a smashed front end and the other vehicle was totalled beyond recognition.

I hit a deer and the only damage i had was plastic and the washer fluid reservoir on the front passenger corner.

They are built like a tank.

(yeahthat)

That is one of the reasons I bought a KJ. My family's safety is more important to me than the extra gas money. I began to feel like I was wizzing down the highway in a little black coffin (05 Vibe). Don't get me wrong it was a great little car with all kinds of safety features ... not enough in a sea of Denalis and Navigators.

Well I think like others have said that it is so heavy because of two reasons:

1. Because of the beefed up unibody steel frame. I have run it through ditches (not purposly) and it didn't damage the vehicle.

2. For improved safety. I have seen the Geo Tracker. Can you Imagine what that would look like if it was hit by a truck.

I like the idea that some people said it was built like a tank. It is. One night while driving I had a deer run full speed into the front side of my Liberty. I was like ohh crap thinking it had damage. I was shocked when I got home and looked at it. There wasn't even a scratch.

Not the mountains.
The Liberty surprised me also when I was sideswiped. The car that hit me was all kinds of messed up. I only had to have a fender flare, quarter panel and trim piece replaced.

Guys i have looked at Safety tests before buying and liberty is the strongest front end colision of them all, while sidesweep it is not the best, but is doing above medium.
May i post a couple links so you guys can compare:
2001 to 2005: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2icefLYY9DA
2008: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmtW76KDYDY

Honda CRV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h66MM6FXq4Q
KIA Sportage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jibg0uAXwoc

Yes it is better and may i add that true differential might add some weight ?

Luke, my girlfriend has a 2009 Pontiac vibe and watch this is pretty impressive for such a small car !!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCYcL4zrmts&feature=related

Why so heavy:

1. UniFRAME Construction
2. 3.7 - the block is same size as 4.7 V8, with two less cylinders
3. Front and Rear Diffs & Suspension - IFS: Cast iron lower and forged steel upper control arms
4. Transfer Case (Select Trac adds center Diff)
5. Automatic Transmission (45RFE little heavier)

There are many reasons, but the UniFRAME construction is probably the bulk of the weight. Exclusive to Jeep, the Liberty's "uniframe" construction incorporates all of the strength and durability of a body-on-frame construction into a unitized construction. By adding stiffness and rigidity to the structure, they enhanced the ride, and strengthened the network of steel beams, rails and pillars (or "safety cage") that surrounds and protects occupants. Chrysler says that more than 70 percent of the underbody is high-strength steel. It also has the highest roof strength of any Jeep vehicle.

Even the Rubicons, plus other 2-door rag-top and "take doors off" jeeps have a lot of weight. It has a lot to do with the uniFrame construction. They made them to last, and to be durable.

Not sure what the weight ratio is; UniFrame -vs- what the drive-line & suspension parts weigh. The interior is light compared to the rest of it.

HowHHis does the liberty's curb weight compare to it's competitors in it's class?

I did like what I seen in the crash test video.
