Sputtering and bouncing rpms help..

My wifes is having a similar issue.
2003 with 72k

I have just started diagnosing it. Cleaned TB but probably could do it better, will look for a guide tonight. I did the plugs about 20k ago, thinking about tackling them again this weekend. I have been told I need to do the ****** flush so thinking about giving it a flush this weekend as well.

I am hoping its not the fuel filter as that is pretty hard to do from what I have read.

For her, it stalled once now on her but it idles very rough and bouncy. She was sitting at a long light in park and the idle bounced and then shut off. Then tonight, after she put it in reverse it sputtered but did not turn off.

Thoughts?

IAC (idle air control) is responsible for rpm and gets really carboned up & port. You may have to replace the IAC if no spring pressure.
Also clean or replace the PCV valve if it has not been done.

Then TPS (throttle position sensor) Can generate a check engine light you have any? But still could use cleaning as well.

Cleaning the fuel injectors is good as well, and I use a Chevron Product called Techron.
Two bottles of Techron to a full tank of fuel and a solid highway run after cleaning the IAC & TPS will make a huge difference in performance, and should restore a steady rpm.

Thoughts on using seafoam as well as what you mentioned? I will most likely be changing the plugs anyway.

Personally I would not use such a strong or harsh cleaner.
The best cleaning method remains with proper auto chems as done with an emission service at dealer.
Chevron Techron is highly researched and developed to be safe and works as promised.

transmission flush should be done at the dealer also. You cannot flush all the old fluid out yourself unless you have the right machine.

I just had mine done. shifts smoother now and seems like a new one.

always use ATF+4

How do I get the cable off the left hand side of the throttle body? I want to take it off to clean it... not the cable the TB

thanks for the advice. I just did the following:

cleaned TB
cleaned AIC
changed plugs (all 6)
I did run seafoam before I did any of the above and didnt get smoke at all

I did buy chevron cleaner you mentioned. Wife has 1/2 tank but will use it when she gets lower before she fills up again.

Will update in a few days unless it goes bad again. Right now the idle does seem much more stable around 700rpm's.
