GM put a "Life span" on their auto parts so that they would wear out after a certain amount of cycles the said part was used/operated.
That way the part would just start malfunctioning/stop working so the vehicle owner would have the "said" automotive part replaced by them selves or the dealer to make the vehicle safer with a new part installed.
(I'm keeping it really simple for the really simple folks!)
It also insured that GM would sell more parts for the vehicles that they sold...
Soon all the other automotive manufactures followed suit and did the same thing.
If an automotive part lasts forever then a automotive manufacture does not make money on replacement parts!
Hence "planned obsolescence"!
It insured that "unanimously", automotive manufactures would be able to sell replacement parts for the vehicles that sold and keep making them money on parts and "keep the vehicle they sold" safer!
Like I said, I'm keeping it simple!

They foreign vehicle makers do the same thing as the big 3,have been for just as long.Heck in Japan they are forced to replace the engine at a certain mileage by there government, how's that for keeping your profits up if your a auto manufacturer?Besides honda and toyota's reliability has nose dived over the last 10 years or so and actually under most others.good point Ryan
I think If American car company's had the same idea as the **** they wouldn't be in financial trouble. Maybe if we build a reliable car people will keep buying it.

What happens when the next vehicle you own has electrical or mechanical problems?...
I won't care because I doubt it will be any ******** like this. I can handle windows falling engines/****** failing. That stuff happens but this is something that shouldn't of happened and is unacceptable.
Have you ever heard of something like this before?
Got a ? for you loves_off_roading..............
Does your key ring have have more then 5 keys and more then one key chain? Basically asking if your key ring weighs like 5lbs.If it has alot of stuff on it that is why some part in the steering column broke(most likely to do with the lock cylinder) and is a common issue on all newer vehicles('90 or newer) but GM vehicles are the worst offenders.
Have you tryed to have anything repaired under warranty? A 2006 KJ is only months off warranty (mine is 2 weeks off warranty) and dealer might work with you and back date it.
speaking of warranty. Why wasn't your speaker wire repaired a warranty job?
