Hey gang.

I saw this article about a couple who've put over a million miles on their '06 Chevy Silverado pickup.

The point isn't that this is a Chevy (I'm not trying to start a war here - ya know, Ford vs Chevy :893Chainsaw-Smilie- ) but the maintenance these folks do regularly. We're talking basic stuff but vitally important.

For those of us planning to put 300,000 + on our Jeeps this couple just proves the point about the value of routine oil changes, regular washing, etc. Enjoy!

How To Put 1.2 Million Miles on your vehicle.

Thats great!
I have always preached the importance of regular maintenance and "at the very least weekly baths". People laugh and say Oh its a 4 wheel drive thats what they are for but if you want one to last you have to keep them clean and lubed!
Todays society of throwing things away and buying another is always such a waste as many good vehicles get kicked to curb for the new flavor of the month .

The article says they put all those miles on the truck towing trailers across the country and Canada too.

Not really hard to rack up that many miles. My old mans '01 F250 PS just past 800,000 miles on the original engine and trans.I never get's driven without either a 42' flatbed or 45' gooseneck horse trailer.Only mods are a 5" straight pipe from the turbo back and Brembo brakes up front,no chip or tune of any kind.Oil is changed every 5000miles with Cenex(Valvoline) 15w40,trans every 30k with filters, gear oil every year with 85w-140 dino, coolant every year.Granted he has gone through a couple of sets of balljoints and u-joints but that is pretty normal for high miles.Had to replace the t-case since my mothers new husband decided to take the drain plug and the fluid.Good to say though those BW t-cases are strong since he drove about 10,000 miles with no fluid in it and towing at the same time. It's a total waste to see a diesel not pulling anything, they last longer when loaded up.

I figure the biggest challenge I'll have to keep my Libby on the road is keeping the body in good shape. I've got two spots I'm a little worried about - the rocker panel under the driver's side passenger door, and the typical spot between the third brake light and the roof rail.

Tom, the clay bar is an amazing way to clean up the paint (yep, finally did that yesterday - WOW!) and focusing on the keeping the undercarriage clean, too. The mechanical maintenance to me is easier because I can replace or repair parts. It's the salt and road brine that causes the insidious, constant eating away of the body panels that drives me crazy. And it always seems to come from the inside-out; I can't see the disease until it's already popped through the body panel. Wish I was more confident in body work...

wash and wax once a week in summer, wax every other week in winter but wash multiple times a week, to get the salt off.

I do 2500-3000 mile oil changes. I refuse to believe when someone tells me I can go to 5, 6, 7 thousand miles between changes...I want to know what my oil looks like in a clear pan so I can see if there is anything in it that doesn't belong. changes are done when I'm close to the mark of 3000, but I'll do it as early as 2500 if I know i'm going on a trip etc.

tires get run into the ground, replaced at the beginning of winter if necessary. Never replace tires in the spring if you're in a snow climate. you want fresh tires for the winter if you can.

i've only put 1000 on the KJ since I started driving it. the xj before it I got with 230000 on the ticker, replaced the motor with a stroker (old one had a cracked piston skirt), and put it up to 265000 in just shy of a year...not alot but not a little. everything before that has been under 5000 miles since purchase of vehicle because I just get bored too easy and sell them when I find something different.

I can't see getting that many miles out of a vehicle from purchase date. No way I could hold onto one vehicle that long lol.

My main 4 wheel drive's I used to swap out every two years when I was in my 20s-30s, always bought new and had a waiting list of guys wanting to buy them. Then I had my fun toys that I kept for several years and lots of miles. 2 out of the 3 Cherokees I had I ran over 250,000 miles ( all bought new). 86 Harley FXRT Sport Glide I kept for 8 years and rode it over 99,250 miles, would of kept it longer but when you can make 3000 more than what you paid for it ...........:banana-mario:One of the 3 early Broncos I had for 7 years still miss it
98 Ford F150 Nascar Edition ran it to 198,000 miles before some one laid out a whole big pile of Franklins for it.
As I get older I tend to keep things longer
The KJ has been around now since 9/21/2004 and have plans for a long time more. Of course the KJ was to be left alone, no mods what so ever, just a DD left untouched but something happened along the way .......................
