WARN M8000 is very affordable and just plain works.
x2. That's what I got and it's great knowing that it'll work when I need it.
Read some reviews on Smittybuilt or Harbor Freight winches- not good. Many don't work out of the box or when you need them. Parts are harder to find too. Plus they're not USA made like the M8000.

What about cable? I have a SB winch with the newer braided cable. Haven't used it yet. Any of y'all used the braided cable yet, and is it any good or junk?

There are pro's and con's for both synthetic and steel, it comes down to user preference, and what type of wheelin' you are going to do. I like rocks, so steel is what I chose(for now) and have been happy with my choice. I may try synthetic, or I may not. Do your research and choose wisely. Either way, number one is to have some sort of self recovery, so any choice you make will be a good choice.

I'm running steel for now, I'll switch to synthetic when the steel ones wears out.
funny... I find lots of good reviews of HF's 12k# winch. I have one and it's been reliable, and I haven't been particularly kind to it.

Luck of the draw is all it boils down to sometimes. You happen to get oh of the few good ones or you happen to get one of the few bad ones.
