Hi all, I am looking at adding a small winch up front, dont want to go all ARB bumper for $$$ sake.
So I am investigating a DIY that keeps much of the stock bumper.

Since this is a DD whatever I do, it cant inhibit that use.

So I was looking at this setup, I have friends and shop access to get this built, but as I was looking at the pictures I was not impressed with how low it appears to makes the front end.
I am betting this would affect the already somewhat poor approach angle of the KJ also the winch clutch control lever seems to be in a very awkward place...

So next thought is to take what I see and build my own that is a bit higher up, maybe 5" or so raised up to keep everything out of the way while playing in the rough...
Then I started to wonder, will that block too much of the rad? Will the electric fan do enough to keep it cool?

any input is welcome...
Thanx

"Detours Backbone" for KJ might interest you. They are discontinued, but a used one may be out there.
One for sale here https://www.jeepkj.com/threads/feeler-detours-usa-backbone-winch-mount.75728/ but it is an older post but they my still have it.
There should be images of it on google.

Gyro
I found a pic of one for an XJ
this is likely similar to what I will build... Simple, light weight, cut the bumper and grill to fit... and maybe crossmember... IDK exactly how that is setup in there...

To be clear, bumper cover trimmed, not the bumper itself.

Hello,
I installed a Champion 3000lb winch on the front bumper of my ‘04 Liberty. I simply drilled holes right through the bumper cover through the steel bumper underneath. It seems to be strong enough for what I want to do with it- hauling logs onto the road to cut up for fire wood. I’ll try to get a picture or two.

I installed a hidden winch on mine. Used a Badlands ZXR 9500(switched to synthetic rope), Badlands Fairlead, Wireless Winch control, Universal Channel Winch Mount, with Badlands Apex shackels. Made up mounting hardware out of 1/4" plate, 4" angle iron, 1/2" 2x3 channel and some 1"stock from my scrap pile. Had some custom cables made up from Battery Cables USA and mounted the winch control unit (removed it from the control box) in the space under the battery. I use the wireless remote to control the winch (don't use the clutch). Mounted the disconnect near battery. I had some minor mods to the bumber cover. Works great.
