Does anybody have a picture of each separate?

I don't know what the difference between them is,k and looking at parts online it looks like they come together, just not sure which is which.

Thanks.

so the intermediate shaft goes inside the front differential to both CV joints?

How can you tell if the cv is going bad compared to the intermediate shaft?

What makes them go bad?

take it apart already and eliminate the possibility :freak3:
Only on the passenger side, if the shaft is bad so is the cv joint...
That's life

Now once i have it apart what exactly goes bad? Would the splines just be worn down?

If you can move the CV joint back and forth excessively then its bad. If it makes noise, its bad. If you replace the CV you replace the intermediate shaft regardless. I couldn't get the intermediate shaft out of the CV joint until Tom gave me the idea to put the shaft in a vice and pound off the CV with a BFH. That being the case you'll be pulling out the shaft from the differential anyway. I didn't even hesitate to also order an intermediate shaft when I did mine because everyone does both anyway and it really seems like a bad idea not to do both.

I was just learning about these parts.

I am still waiting for a day off to be able to get into the shop to start the troubleshhoting process.

Jack up your Jeep
Go to each wheel and spin by hand
The wheel that is hard to spin is where the issue is

The problem you have is that you want to be told
"replace this and your problem is solved"
and you want people who don't drive you Jeep
to tell you this
It can not be done
You trouble shot your problem and thought it was brakes
but failed to completely eleminate them as the problem
I can think of several things that will make groaning or
grinding noise on the front end of a Jeep
1 being a caliper sticking and that could be caused
by a bad brake line
Do this
1) jack up all 4 wheels off of the ground
2) start the engine
3) press the brakes hard
4) turn off engine
5) try to spin each front wheel by hand
If you can then it is not the brakes
If you find that 1 is making noise
Remove that wheel listen to the bearing
and/or the cv joint to find the noise
If no noise then get it aligned

by the way, find out where you can get the parts in your area before you take it apart, that way you can get them sooner if your parts are worn. Got mine at a local scrap yard, against a few people's recommendations, and after 2 years it's still going on strong...it's a matter of watching what you buy.

And to confuse you even more, make sure you get a reman because a new cv joint might not be the same length bwaaahhhahahahaha! enjoy

Well the problem with getting parts over here in Germany is that they are extremely expensive.... Usually i order my parts off autozone. Free shipping :]

So if i jack up my jeep, start the engine, press brakes firmly then shut off the engine. I should be able to spin my wheels?

Just making sure im 100% on this before I go tomorrow.

Thanks

Yes, you are trying to determine if your calipers are sticking when you do this. If you have a sticky caliper, the wheel won't spin easily.

that makes sense, just never have done it before.

Now how easily should they spin??

should they have any resistance?
