My guess is it has something to do with the filler flap that is down the fill tube that prevents someone from siphoning any fuel out of the tank through the fill tube. I've read of other people with this problem, though I've never had it myself, so I'm sure they can point out what the solution is to this.

I have problems with a gas overfill. The nozzle is completely in the tank and fairly often (25% or so) I will overfill my tank and gas will flow down the side of my jeep

This happens at multiple different stations and pumps. Not sure what the issue is.

I put the tip of the nozzle just bearly into the tank (just enough to fold open that first little flap door thing, then click it on the slowest setting i can lock it in. this usually works. I have a problem with the nozzle all the way in at full blast though. This sounds different.

Wow, I crank the nozzle to full blast, stick it in the jeep, and let it run 'til it automatically cuts off. Never even look back. Never had an overfill. What you guys are describing sounds like backpressure, which once you breach the flapper cover shouldn't be an issue... hmm...

Does the 2002 have a flapper? My 04 is just open.. :confused:Got any pics?

My 04 has over flowed a couple times but its not done it in awhile. Not sure if its related but it usually happened at BP and its not happened since i stopped going to BP's. It happened at more than one place. I usually put it all the way in and filler up as fast as possible.

this is very common with boats, most figure that it is just like filling up your car. It isn't. There is a very careful technique to properly filling a boat and avoiding overspills. This is typical on boats of all different sizes and styles.

The most common issue is the venting system. If the vent is clogged the air in the tank must try to escape through the same hose as the fuel that is going in, which is what causes the fuel to change course and come back towards you. Check the venting on the tank, and the EVAP canisters.

Another issue may be the nozzle, they wear out easily, especailly when people "top-off" the pressure sensor on the nozzle will wear out which will cause it to continue running even when is should have stopped.

Try a different station or nozzle.
