It is really starting to swell. :icon_lol: This was after a 200 mile hwy drive.
Kinda has a bit of a soft spot just behind the clamp at top center.
Should I get a dealer OEM hose or would a Gates or Goodyear be a better choice?

I did the Mopar route but I've used Gates many times for other vehicles. Mine did that exact same thing but changed before they burst. Past experience says the top ones always degrade from the inside out before the lower.

Yikes! That looks like 3 hours on the side of the road waiting to happen. I changed mine out with napa brand when I did my rad since it was mildly looking like yours.

I went with the Mopar since the original lasted 150k and 12 years. Not that there is anything wrong with the Gates but the Mopar wasn't very expensive in comparison. Mopar replacement was probably made by Gates or Goodyear anyway. I guess I'd say I'm a bit superstitious.

I have a couple very shallow gauges in my upper radiator hose but its still firm even at 108k on the clock. I'm more or less probably going to address it before the big road trip in Feb to Florida and back.

I remember seeing that edge your clip sits on that is part of the fuse box that kinda looks broken too. no idea why it looks like that.

My radiator overflow hose clamp is different than yours though.
Here's a pic. of it. Sorry but
All I have is a screen grab of a vid too bad to post on my other thread

Thanks Brain. I see yours is a hold off clip for the overflow hose.
Will get better photos in daylight and remove clip as it also may be broken, or different.

I always wondered what it was for! I have never seen under the hood of a 2.4 until I just googled it. The belt routing looks like a nightmare!
I am afraid to ask....How are they to work on Troy?

Does your buldge go down after it cools?

I would think there would be some thermal expansion.
Wifey came back from Phx and I took a quick look but it wasn't as bad as yours.

Only slight difference when cool. Hot coolant under pressure will expand the upper rad hose slightly but.....
Anytime you have a pronounced bulge close to the clamps it is a sign that the hose is weakening and if you feel a soft spot, like mine has, replacement is in order.
My experience lately suggests that summer under hood coolant temps that can reach 227F+ does not help any. I normally lift the hood as well on my vehicles incl KJ immediately after parking to assist in not allowing the temps to rise, once the vehicle is turned off. Quality and cores of hoses make a difference. The heater hoses should also be inspected closely as well. I wonder if a steel braided upper rad hose could be fitted to the KJ?

I was looking at my Upper Radiator Hose today, I believes its an after market since I have noticed a lot of blue paint markings all over my engine, differential etc... which I have taken as an indication that work has been done on it at one point. Upper Radiator Hose has been marked at both ends with Blue Paint and Coolant Tank has been market as well.
