Sounds like a classic wheel bearing issue diagnosis. Just because the noise is more prominent when turning left doesn't mean it's automatically the left bearing though. Get somebody else to drive while you sit on right and see if it sounds different. Of course the conventional wisdom is to replace both of them.

I'm pretty sure at this point it's the RIGHT wheel bearing, as the wife sitting in the front passenger seat noted the noise as well, and she's HORRIBLE and noticing anything unless it's smacking her in the face! :happy175:

guess I'll yank the plow and get see about replacing that bearing today.

pull caliper
pull rotor
disconnect ABS sensor
undo axle nut
undo 3 flange bolts
pray and yank assembly off
assembly is reverse of disassembly

Yank the plow? Only caution I'd add is, be certain to re-torque axle nut to specification.

That really interesting to hear actually. Any background as to why the OE NGKs are such a preference?

I actually went with cheap copper Densos in my 05 a few months back. Those stockers only had about 50k on them so nowhere near as bad as when I did the 02. The Densos were a real cheap Amazon add-on item so gave them a try. They perform very well also. I'm no expert but I think it's just the heat range and spark pattern that matters. The coppers won't last as long of course but that's how the engineers set the engine up so makes sense it may run better. Like I said, I never had issues with the Bosch +4s but did notice a difference when I went back to the coppers. My Subaru takes coppers too (actually had OE NGKs also with a slightly different heat range) and I hear the same thing on some of those forums.

I grabbed the wheel/hub and try to feel for movement, but it's tight as a drum; no movement in any direction, no binding feelings. I hate it when things aren't OBVIOUSLY broken!

Best part is , IF the axles were replaced , sometimes they come with a new nut. And it's always a different size then OEM from what I've experienced. So I've ended up going to autozone to rent a socket but never returning it aka bought it. Now I have all the sizes for my various vehicles in my collection.

Yeah, depending on your impact situation you might want to do the axle nut first, someone can hold the brake pedal down while you loosen it.

Replaced the upper radiator hose on the XJ today. The battery chafed the old one. It was missing the corrugated sleeve.

when you take the center cap off the stock steelies, you can get to the axle nut through the wheel it looks like. hoping to do the ol' anchor the vehicle down while I break the nut loose before taking the rest apart. :D

I just put a pry bar into the studs on the hub and loosened it easily with a breaker bar.

I painted the 3 torx bolts with a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone the day before. They were quite rusted.

I did all kinds of tests to try and figure out which one was making the noise Noise seemed to be most prominent on the right side. I guessed wrong and ended up doing both of them.

A certain set of instruction cited incorrectly as 1-7/16. While this worked, proper metric sizing would be better.

Looking for the NGK plugs I am coming across a ton of different model numbers all with a copper core. Is there a certain one that works best?

It's going on! Rear already done. Combining the 2.5 kit with new upper and lower control arms with new MOOG LBJs to be pressed ibsure makes following "instructions" interesting. Nearly need a navigator for this trek! Sheesh...

I remove wheel then just stick a big screwdriver into the fins of the rotor and against the caliper, then breaker bar. Works for me.

Moved the KJ out of the garage and into the sunshine. Needed the space to fix my little snow thrower. Pretty easy fix considering it was about 17 years old. Now on to the Ranger and the wonky rear drums...

Well not my jeep but a friend popped out of his ball joint, that pulled the top one out with it and broke the axle shaft/ujoint. Left it over night and came back with ball joints and proper tools this morning. He has no idea how to work on it and typically takes it to a mechanic. So I did it for him.

He still needs an axle shaft but this was enough to drive it home in 2wd.

Drop into 4-Hi, set parking break, set chocks, break lugs, jack. Drive train should hold your backup for you. On my second on today.

I replaced my rear upper control arm today. It's amazing what you can get used to if it's a gradual transition lol
