I am tired of painting/clear coating it every year.
Basically the inside of basket gets worn quickly on the bars, and scratches easily, which leads to rust. The Rola basket is steel.
Want it pure black, was thinking a bedliner application.
IDK are there any other hard commercial coatings that are super strong & wont scratch easily?

Tim, check out MonstaLiner - I've seen lots of posts over on JeepForum.com. Seems to be lots of happy customers who've used the stuff on everything from TJ/CJ tubs to underbodies of various models.

Your mileage may vary :waytogo:

I just had a good look at Rola basket on top rail areas. Not looking too good.

The paint/clear coat is breaking up in many of the top rail areas.
Going to remove it for fall & store it, before all the rain & ice makes it any worse.
I guess I'm going to have to sand it or sand blast it, before laying a better coating like mentioned above on it?
Spring project I guess.

Ya according to the POR-15 site/ Jay Leno promo video, it is UV sensitive and then must be painted over for direct sunlit areas.

First I'd check around local bed liner application shops for the best price to have it done professionally. I have one who'll do anything you want at very reasonable prices . Then if you can't find a price you're wiling to pay, get the stuff tj recommends and do it. Yourself.

Got 2 quotes today, one from a Line-X shop and the other from Rhino Liner.
Both wanted $150 plus tax. Does that seem out to lunch or is that a good deal IDK?
Apparently there is an additional $50 fee if you want to have the extra longer lasting UV protectant.
I guess they do fade over time outside, but still should be just a bit lighter shade of black.

My friend Chris has the LineX with UV protectant on his . Flares, bumpers roof rack etc. Some parts were done 7-8 years ago now and still look as good as the ones done 3-4 years ago. My RL rack has the same but of course only a year or so old.
Troys looks new as well on his

That sounds really good Tom. I suppose the extra UV coating must be some special type of clear coat?
Is it then more shiny?

Do either come with a warranty? If so does it cover fade, scrapes, peeling? How long? Here, a pickup bed goes for $4-500. Thinking of a rack as "just a few little bars" is a bit misleading, as they'll waste more between the bars as what'll be on them.

TJ's home app is cheaper, but most aren't equipped or capable of doing a quality job without buying into a lot of one use only equipment.

I removed the Rola Basket today for winter.
Then sprayed a whole can of Tremclad High Heat fast dry on it.

It almost looks like new again. The plastic air deflector is now painted to, it was faded.
Surprising the mounting brackets did not have much rust on them.

After painting, the brackets look good enough now too.

Next spring I will remount the Basket, and go though until the fall.
Maybe next fall, I will get it Lin-X'd, as this paint thing is getting old.
The good news is with the basket off, I can now clay bar & wax the roof properly again.:party52:
