Command Trac Question

Hey all, new to the forum. Hello My name is forrest. I own a 2002 KJ that is my wifes daily driver with just over 180k on her. I have owned it since 2002 and love the baby Jeep. (I drive an 89 Wagoneer).She is finally giving us a problem, seems I have a bad front drive shaft, obviously a common problem and finding a used one is like pulling teeth. OEM about 600 for the part, rebuilt 450, rebuild kit 120. Want to go with option 3. My question is this. Can I run a command track (np231j) without the front shaft while I have it rebuilt or will it destroy the case? I know in my select trac waggy that I would destroy the VC if I did this, however I am getting ready to convert my waggy to a NP208 and I can run that without a front shaft. So is the 231 like the 229 and use a VC or is it like the 208? Thanks in advance for the help!

Like the 208
The 231 can run with no front D/S just fine
And if you install an SYE in it then you
can run on just the front or rear

Will take you less than an hour to replace the front CV joint (I presume that's what's bad rather than an entire shaft) using this kit for the front joint. About $80 with shipping and you're on your way. Twack, a member here, did a great write-up here in the How-To section on the replacement of the front CV joint.

Save yourself a few bucks for another 'upgrade' later on... :smokin:

The KJ's 231 does have a slip yoke on the rear driveshaft/t-case output but you can remove the rear driveshaft and it will not leak as the rear output shaft is sealed before the slip yoke.
