So .. when it is like more than -20 outside ... when i start the rig she whines... it sounds like the power steering pump ...noise is coming from driver side forsure. only does it for like 3 seconds... checked the fluid .. seems normal ... is this normal?

also sometimes... after running for ike 5 or 7 minutes i get a odd smell coming through the vent .. assuming somethign to do with the heater core... lasts 25 seconds than goes away ... thoughts?

Sounds like alternator or power steering whine. I had both and man as it loud! If you want to see if your power steering pump is going bad when the jeep is cold turn the steering wheel all the way to either side and if the noise gets louder than the pump is bad.

Did you top up the power steering reservoir??
You need to only fill to the "max when cool" level or else when the fluid heats up it overflows and could be your strange smell.

Mine takes in air when it's cold which causes the whine (when it warms up, this doesn't happen). I think it has a slight leak in it. I'm usually down a couple of ounces of fluid every few months.

Numerous vehicles of mine in the past have made some sort of whine noise (either power steering and alternator) when initially starting it up in sub zero weather. Never an issue.
What I compare it to is... you try sleeping overnight in that weather, and see if you don't whine in the morning too! ;)

Looks like your "L" key is malfunctioning? :happy175:

Yes air being sucked into the air box at a high rate when the engine is cold is normal.

Pick up a cheap wireless keyboard and lock it away in a drawer or put it in a high place :) then he can use the one that you use whenever he wants.

I don't think I've ever had a car with power steering that didn't whine for a bit at -20C (-4F). That cold fluid is hard to pump!

That said, when I got my jeep last month, the power steering pump whined for a bit after startup. It wasn't noisy, but it did whine. Checking the fluid revealed it to be dark brown with a slight burnt smell. A few weeks ago I had the transmission flushed, and they flushed the power steering system too. Boom! No more whine!

Find out how much to get the Power Steering flushed too.

Keep in mind that you MUST use ATF+4 in both the transmission and the power steering. If it's not a dealer that's doing it, make sure they use the right stuff!

Depends on the year of the KJ my 03 takes Power Steering fluid, ATF4 being mixed with mine caused some issues. Go with what your owners manual specify's.

As for the other issue - the smell - is likely a leaking valve cover gasket. Especially since the rig sat for 3 years seals, gaskets, etc may have dried up. The oil drips down from the back lower corners of the valve covers right down on the catalytic converters. The smoke then rises right into the HVAC intake. You'll smell the smoke when at a stop but not when moving.

Do a search on replacing the gaskets - several have posted How-To's. :waytogo:

Is a power steering flush a dealer-only proposition, or can this be done in your freezing cold driveway?
