As for the other issue - the smell - is likely a leaking valve cover gasket. Especially since the rig sat for 3 years seals, gaskets, etc may have dried up. The oil drips down from the back lower corners of the valve covers right down on the catalytic converters. The smoke then rises right into the HVAC intake. You'll smell the smoke when at a stop but not when moving.

Do a search on replacing the gaskets - several have posted How-To's. :waytogo:

i've thought this too because of other posts i saw ... i'm looking like a mother and i dont see a bit of drip or spray or anything behind in there... if it is it is very minimal and only does it once per start .... not every few minutes or whatever/

Is a power steering flush a dealer-only proposition, or can this be done in your freezing cold driveway?

I suppose you could do it in the driveway... but if you break one of the high pressure lines, or it leaks, well... you can't take it back and point at it and say, "Hey! It didn't do this before!"

Also, you'd have to pump clean fluid through it somehow to ensure you clear out the steering rack. It wasn't horribly expensive at the dealer, I think it and the ****** flush set me back about $300 even. Only had to take it back for leaks, once! :icon_lol:

I couldn't see my leak either unless I stuck my head up beside the converter and had a bright light right on it. It was just a small leak but enough to smell at times

I think I'll let the pros do that one then. Thanks. :)

I use a turkey baster draw out all I can from the pump, fill up, turn wheels back and forth, do this two - three times then drive for a couple of days and do it again. Fluids always been pretty clean looking . I do it every 25-30,000 miles and no issues so far ( knocking on wood)

You make it sound so easy that I'm almost tempted to try it. This is how I lost my virginity, you know. :pp:

I do it the same way, but use a jumbo sized syringe (the power steering fluid that is, not the virginity thing). Same for sucking out the old brake fluid.

I was thinking of the bulb type of siphon so as not to poison myself. I guess sucking doesn't come as easy for me as it does for some of the rest of you. :happy175:

(Thanks for a good and helpful answer, by the way.) :waytogo:

I don't think I want to know how a Turkey Baster was involved in that. :blah:

Although Tom's plan sounds like a good one!
