Pardon the pun up there!!LOL

I was just wondering cause I noticed the 8.25 takes 75w-90 agl 5 gear oil and the other three diffs for libbies take 75w-140 synthetic.

plus the friction mod for a limited slip

Anyone know why??

There isnt a difference between the diffs other than the limited slip.

The reason it calls for 75w-140 syn is b/c towing put more stress on the drivetrain..

The friction modifier lets the clutches slip in the limited slip.

:D

So you can use 75w-140 syn in the 8.25 and it just pads it a little more??

The towing diff is the same it just has 75w-140. Huh, cool.

I am asking cause I went to auto zone to get fluids to change my diff and I forgot my Haynes manual and they told me to use 75w-140 and then I checked my Haynes when I got home and it said the 75w-90.

Just wanna make sure I'm not gonna damage it. I know engines, suspensions and brakes but drive chains I have less experience with.

Thanks jeepjeepster!

I guess you could call using 75w-140 a 'pad.' If you used 80w-90 for towing, it wouldnt really hurt anything but 75w-140 is better suited for the extra heat and torque that comes with towing or offroading.

The front diff calls for 75w-140 syn no matter if you tow or not..

I would just use 75w-140 syn front and rear no matter what. :)

That's not true, some years of the KJ call for 80-90 dino in the front diff. The earlier models say use 75w-140syn in the front but I've been using 75w90syn front and rear and I offroad and tow 4000lbs+ and have had zero problems.Just remember 75w140 will be like tar in cold climates, that's why I use 75w90.Plus my junk is hitting the scales at 5400lbs now so any little advantage for better mpg's is good for me and my wallet.

The owners manual for my 04 calls for 75w-140 for the front. Doesnt really matter.. Like we both said, it wont really hurt anything.
