I need to replace my thermostat in my UK 2004 2.8 CRD.
I have the part, but three times now I have tried to remove the old one (wasting all the coolant) but not been able to get to the last bolt at the bottom of the unit.
I take the air filter box out, remove some of the pipes from the thermostat unit (loosing the coolant). I can then undo two bolts, but there is a 3rd right at the bottom and set back more and I just cant't get a socket onto it.
I have been using a extended socket bar, a wobble joint, long socket... but just cannot get on it. There is some heat shielding below the stat unit, that might be partly getting in the way, not sure.
Can anyone give me some advice to get this damn thing off!!! I don't really want to pay £80 and hour to a mechanic for a job I am capable of doing myself.

IIRC it helps to remove the heatshield, but it CAN be done by itself.
Rathjer then a wobbler, Its better to come straight in on it with a 1/4" drive socket and an extension…sorry dont know metric equivalents.
