Going to have the KJ on hoist soon for inspection. As it is now 10 years old, I'm wondering if there is a requirement to lubricate cables or shift linkages etc.
Everything is shifting/ working fine right now. No mention in FSM I could find.
Transmission Auto 42RLE
Transfer Case Dana 30-186mm -Command Trac (Part Time) NV-231
What should I be looking for while on hoist? Shift Bushings, cables etc?
What do u recommend I use in spray form or grease or not at all?

Brakes e cable?
Anything inside as far as shifters or cables need lube as well?
Suggestions Appreciated THX!

Good questions, Tim. I don't have a specific answer for you but you've given me ideas for my Spring cleaning on the KJ. Was a brutal winter with lots of salt to deal with - lubing cables etc is now on my list :waytogo:

Thanks!

Bob

Ya Bob, I was thinking about white lithium grease spray, or even silicone spray..
for around the bushings/shift areas around trans & t-case linkages.
Hopefully Tom Or Troy may see this and chime in...I'm not sure what the proper requirement is.
I think before I put it up on lift, I better power wash under there, is really does look like caked on :favorites68:

The silicone spray will also be applied to all the rubber shaft boots etc...keeps em like new, and not cracking...and then spewing ...( I wonder if that would help output seals as well?)

Keeping it clean and working everything ( run the 4 wheel drive lever through the whole range) does more than some lubes. Have to remember that when you spray a lube on cables etc that it will attract dirt which will then stick and cause more issues.

Thanks Tom.
After it is all clean running though all shift modes, do you spray both linkages going into trans & t-case?
If so with what ..would you recommend?

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
For the trans and t-case shift cables I would not bother trying to lube. They have Teflon impregnated tube liners and stainless ends which have a tight tolerance and your most likely going to cause a sticking issue by trying to lube.Just keep the under carriage clean and shift the t-case monthly.

The parking brake cables are different but if you use the parking brake you should not have a issue for years and then the most likely issue will be a broken cable.Trying to lube those also will cause built up of junk which will accelerate wear.Again I'd just keep the exposed ends clean and cycle the cable often.

If your really wanting to lube them use a dry graphite type lube.

I've had bad luck with white lithium grease. I usually use some 3in1 oil, which works great. I used some lithium grease on my sway bar bushings when they started to squeak. They started back a few days later. I cleaned the lithium grease off and hit them with 3in1 and they haven't made noise since...its been 3 months.

Keeping bushing clean is the number one thing you can do. I never use oils/grease etc as that will deteriorate them, plus collects dirt and and crap from the road. Only time i have is when someone pulled in complaining and i knew that wouldn't wash the undercarriage good anyways or take care of them so spray them and send them on their way.
