I recently had the the common front driveshaft CV joint boot tear.

I found the CV Joint kit and ordered it. Trying to install it I got the dust cap off, which was not that easy, the snap ring off but can not get the joint out!!
It is a spline gear?

This is the joint:

In the video it just slides off, well in real life that is not the case...
Any ideas on getting it off without damaging anything?

BFH??? rockon.gif

(dunno)(dunno)

:D
I would think you could tap on it lightly and it should slide off, with all the dirt, rust etc thats in there I'm sure it will slide off rather hard. I'm doing one in a week for another member so if not by then I'll see what it takes to do it.

Is it open on the backside? Put the crappy CV in a vice and use a hammer and a brass drift to coax the shaft out.

I pulled the dust cap off the rear too to give me a good flat surface to smack and even put a gear puller on it tight and smacked it with little success..
I will keep working at it and let you know what works!

Actually got it with the gear puller and hammer while using the vise to hold it still. As a weakling I needed to bust out the 1/2" ratchet to get the gear puller tight enough then with a few smacks of the BFG it came loose, but not without a fight :D
Now bed time, then work then tomorrow after work I think get the new joint on, and drain and fill the transfer case. :D

Any advice on greasing the new one up? I know its self explanatory but if there is any tricks or hints you guys know about let me know. I really don't want to be replacing this CV joint again for at least a couple years :D

Came with a package of grease, use it,work it into the voids around the ball bearings, sort of fill front/boot end with some, fill rear with rest.Got the whole package into mine, minus a little that came out when putting three pieces together.
