My front pinion bearing is shot. Way much play in it. Read up it looks like this is a pretty complicated job to get the bearing off and a new one on. Would it be worth it to just get a new front dana axle? about $300 on ebay.

Also. the cross member that holds up the mount under the transfer case. The bolts keep rusting out! Anyone have this problem? I have snapped off two of them removing that cross bar. Any solutions?

Thanks!

If you have to ask this question, you need a professional. New bearing will change preload needs, shimming needs, and ultimately require someone who can set gears.

So, cheaper would be to replace it all.

Yes, after doing some research it looks like it will be much easier to just replace the entire carrier.

I have a new rack n' pinion that needs to go in as well. Might as well knock them both out at the same time.

Cheers,

I may be a bit confused here. I am not sure the front pinion bearing is gone. There is more than one bearing in there from the yolk to the pinion right? Could it be the first one, on the yolk, that is bad? Is it pressed on?

It's all the same. Bad pinion bearings mean setting preload, setting lash, and likely that your ring and pinion are damaged

Thanks for the info. I have a feeling this was part of my problem.
