Damn near died in it.

Was returning home from a friends house (we had a few drinks last evening, so I stayed there instead of driving)

Driving on a somewhat busy stretch of 2-lane highway when a passing car ran through some water on the road.
The water splashed across my windshield and instantly froze!

So there I am trucking along at 50 mph, TOTALLY blind

Off the throttle, on the brakes and turn slightly turn to the right (I'd rather drive in the ditch than hit someone head on
Hit the wipers to no effect
Stab at he side window controls and stick my head out the window, only to have an oncoming truck whip by 2 feet from my side mirror!

Pull off onto the shoulder and hit the 4-way flashers. Then decide to pull into an nearby driveway so if the next guy through there has the same issue he won't smash into the back of me.
Extract the seat from my butt, take a breath.

I get out, scrap off the windshield and notify the sheriffs department of the issue so they at least put some sings up or something.
As I was on the phone, 3 more cars pulled off in the same area I did...for the same reason.
Hope nobody dies on that little stretch of tarmac this morning

Now that is some seriously cold weather for water to instantly freeze right on a windshield.

Red front diff fluid?

So when I changed the front diff fluid today RED stuff drained out! Is there such a thing as red diff oil?

Was this factory? An indication it has likely never been changed?

Stumped.

I replaced it with oil per the owners manual.

Oddly, the transfer case plugs take one size hex plug wrench. But the front diff is a different size hex on the drain. And a 3/8" square plug on the fill.

Go figure. I guess we are lucky all the spark plugs are the same size.

Jeep thermometer said 27*

It's a science experiment in windchill.
55 mph 'wind'
27*
~ 4 degrees.

Add in a thin layer of water and voila! ICE

I thought windchill doesn't effect non-biological things. https://www.quora.com/Do-vehicles-feel-wind-chill

"It cannot, however, reduce the temperature of these objects below the ambient temperature, no matter how great the wind velocity. "

I do remember when I was first learning how to drive and had my first nor'easter and attempted to pass a snow plow. Got about 100lbs of NJ Parkway snow dumped onto my windshield and no way for the wipers to compensate.

Red Gear Lube? Not that I know of...
The red stuff you drained out of the front diff did it smell like stinky gear oil or more neutral smelling & thin like Trans fluid?

Since the transfer case takes red Atf+4, they probably used the same in the front diff by mistake.
Highly recommended to check the owners manual, before adding anything into our Jeeps.

Not sure that's right. Cold windy days suck heat away from buildings and make the heater work harder.

Many years ago I had a VW squareback in Italy that wouldn't start if the engine end was parked toward the sea during the rainy, windy, winter months. Maybe that was a global magnetic phenomena... early fuel injection... deep voodoo... don't buy one.

According to NOAA: https://www.weather.gov/safety/cold-faqs

Can windchill Impact my car's radiator or exposed water pipe?

The only effect windchill has on inanimate objects, such as car radiators and water pipes, is to shorten the amount of time for the object to cool. The inanimate object will not cool below the actual air temperature. For example, if the temperature outside is -5°F and the windchill temperature is -31°F, then your car's radiator will not drop lower than -5°F.

In the example above, if the Jeeps thermo said it was 27 degrees, no matter how fast you go, the temp of the Jeep is not going to be lower than 27 degrees.

That would be my assumption too.

And yes, I downloaded and printed the entire 425 page owner's manual. It is in a binder with the tools. I consult it often.

All fluids (except power steering) are drained and replenished per the manual. QuadraT had a great price on 5 liter jugs of Mopar ATF +4.

Point taken.
Maybe it wasn't so much "wind chill" as the temperature of the glass itself?
Spray of water hitting a smooth surface that was below freezing temperature.
