learn from my mistake, stop throwing parts at it right now, do a compression test, if that is good, do a leak down test, (that will show you if you need new heads), if the leak down test is good, test fuel pressure, injectors, etc...

if you need any oem injectors or sensors, let me know, as i have all of my originals because i was stupid and used the money powered parts cannon before doing full diagnostics.

Yeah? I have those items in my arsenal. Damn. I really didn’t even think it could be that bad.
Unfortunately I have to work outside and after this storm passes - should be almost 50 this weekend. I’ll check it out and let ya know
Thanks

yea, i just replaced the heads on my 2006 3.7l, it wasn't an easy job, but it definitely wasn't as bad as i thought it was going to be. the tips i would give to anyone who is replacing the heads would be:
  1. the bolts that hold the exhaust pipe to the manifolds came out most of the way and then they broke the clips and the nuts just started spinning with the bolt, i lost patience and cut the exhaust, which required the purchase of a new exhaust and cats
  2. zip ties to secure the secondary timing chains to the gears on the idler sprocket work just as good, if not better than the tool designed for the task
  3. i took a lot of pictures to help me remember where things like standoffs for hoses and wires went, the orientation of the timing marks, etc...
  4. i also ignored most of the FSM's instructions about timing marks and put my own on the chains and sprockets with a paint pen, (the manual gives good info for putting a brand new timing set on a motor, the steps for which seem overly complex for what is needed when replacing the heads when you can remove the timing chains and sprockets as an assembly and make your life easier.
  5. replace all of the chain guides and tensioner arms as well as the primary chain tensioner, cheap insurance to make sure they aren't falling apart.
  6. a long breaker bar or long ratchet and a speed square takes some of the guesswork out of the torque procedure for the head bolts
  7. replace the passenger side head first, it has way more clearance around it for you to focus on climbing the learning curve.
  8. remove all of the rocker arms so you can avoid worrying about crashing valves into pistons and wait to re-install them after you have all of you timing marks aligned
  9. take your time, print out the relevant parts of the FSM, use baggies with labels for all the hardware, etc...

And my husband floored it in the rain going uphill on an on-ramp.
And spun out.
This is only the 4th day he’s driven it to work.

a couple of those, a roll of wide masking tape, and a sharpie, are what I used the last time I did an engine tear down and rebuild. as parts come off they go in the bins and get labeled and numbered on the lid. that way you know what order you took things off, as it stands to reason they'll go back on in reverse. :D

eh... a heat gun and some effort would probably take most of the hurt out of it at least.

Swapped the rear diff from 3.54 to 3.73 last night. :winner_third_h4h: Took the coils and extra isolators while I was at it, and the rear came up nearly 2".

Made a couple trips for errands today - so far so good. Can't tell the ratio change so far. Maybe it'll be more apparent on grades at highway speeds.

Off to do the front now... :sawzall:

Mounted the bracketry I've had laying around for years that enables it to be towed.

Got the setup originally to tow it to other dealerships far away back when it had the imaginary warrenty.

Someday I'll make a light bracket to fit the mount; Some other day I'll use it to drag the thing home when it dies.

Started to tear down the 02 to find out what cylinder keeps misifing after I changed the replacement coils last year and recently replaced #6 under warranty

Removed all plugs and injectors.
My 2002 injectors are blue with 4 holes on the disc.
From what I read here - isn’t it supposed to have one hole ?

Aired up the tires, put the wheels on, and got it off the jackstands.

ARP head studs and TURBO DIESEL FREAK's miraculously expensive thermostat housing are next.

Today was bleed the brakes day after discovering a crack/condensation on the rubber seal.
To get the rubber seal you have to buy the cap, so dealer has one for me to install for next week.
It is good every couple of years anyways to get new brake fluid installed!
Check your rubber seal too!
I made a temp fix using silicone until I can get the new cap.
