Recalls very rarely have a cut off point (because they are safety related)
I've seen 17~18 yr old vehicles getting fixed under warantee. Just had a recall about 12 yr old Mazda driver side airbag (getting a new one next week)

I wish my Liberty Renegade WOULD BURN! PLEASE!!!!

It is the biggest POS that I have even owned in my LIFE! Better engineering could have been done by a combination of the Marx Brothers, the Three Stooges and Abbott and Costello!

I could give you a complete litany of problems and engineering disasters, but, it would take a book to do so. Just to touch the tip of the iceberg, i will list but a very few.

1) Need to drop the exhaust and front propeller shaft just to change a starter!

2) Drum brakes on the rear for one year only!

3) Window controls in between the seats, backwards from normal and in a position that requires turning your arm into a pretzel to reach!

4) Window mechanisms that fail so badly and often that the after market companies redesigned them at their cost!

5) Cheap Chinese metal that won't even braze!

6) Windshields that leak and allow the metal to corrode around them causing structural integrity issues.

7) Cheap and low quality parts throughout that required recalls to solve!

8) Bad computers that fry for no reason and are now impossible to find because the chips are out of production!

9) Battery cables that are so short that it is impossible to service them! (I had to rewire the starting system because the original system was built with under sized wires.)

10) Roof leaks from luggage racks that were never installed correctly.

There are 10 of the reasons that come to mine immediately. Yes, it is up for sale and it cannot go away fast enough! If I had not actually put money into it I would have sent it to the scrap yard long before wasting time and money trying to turn it into a decent vehicle. What was the old saying? "You cannot make a silk purse from a sow's ear!" That certainly applies to Jeep and Chrysler! Actually, it seems to apply to ANY vehicle as of late. It's just that this garbage can is the worst I've seen in a long time. It is also one of the reasons that I drive a second generation Explorer XLT as a daily driver, knowing that I can depend upon it to get me around and not fall apart in the parking lot!

Anyway, there you have my opinion. I really am stumped as to why you people think this thing is the cat's meow. It's not. It's a total trash can on wheels. All I can surmise is that you people are gluttons for punishment.

I'm gone!

HF-All of those items are repairable.
I guess some just can't see the value in spending some $ to maintain & repair their Jeeps.
If you want to play sometimes ya gotta pay$ !
Besides the initial purchase price of $18k I paid for my 04, I put another $15k in improvements.
My Jeep runs great & takes me fishing/camping in style!

I am glad you like the "Explorer" and have good luck with it.

Wouldn't it just be easier to use your other hand? (Unless you are missing your right hand, then I am sorry, but then using your wipers would make you pretzel again so...

I had a Mercury Mistake for a few months, lost a **** load of money, it was the biggest piece of crap car I ever owned, and I took a loss to get rid of it because I was ready to set it on fire. I bought a lemon... plain and simple. You bought a lemon... plain and simple.

1: Try changing out an alternator in a Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute. Brilliant location.

2: Yep rear drums too... Ford. 2002-

3: Yeah, I'll give you this one...

Horse Feathers should try replacing an alternator on a Dodge Caliber. Or a #6 Spark plug on a Ford Ranger 4.0L V6. Again you bought a brand new model vehicle. Expect bugs and issues... Sell the Jeep. Buy an Exploder and replace transmissions like underwear...

Funny you mention the alternator. Just replaced the alt on a Jeep Patriot 2.4L. UGH.

1) Need to drop the exhaust and front propeller shaft just to change a starter! - OMG, 4 Bolts!

2) Drum brakes on the rear for one year only! - Was upgraded to disc brakes after the first year for a reason!

3) Window controls in between the seats, backwards from normal and in a position that requires turning your arm into a pretzel to reach! - Put down the doobie so you can use you're right arm!

4) Window mechanisms that fail so badly and often that the after market companies redesigned them at their cost! - Valid point to a degree!

5) Cheap Chinese metal that won't even braze! - Save some money for a TIG/MIG Welder!

6) Windshields that leak and allow the metal to corrode around them causing structural integrity issues. - Have seal replaced with new windshield, I had multiple windshields replaced in my KJ and never had this issue!

7) Cheap and low quality parts throughout that required recalls to solve! - Buy a Power Rangers Tricycle if you don't want to deal with recalls. Would you rather have a recall or have the problem ignored? Also try owning a GM!

8) Bad computers that fry for no reason and are now impossible to find because the chips are out of production! - Buy an early model Morris Minor if you don't like computers and technology!

9) Battery cables that are so short that it is impossible to service them! (I had to rewire the starting system because the original system was built with under sized wires.) - Must have been replaced or modified by the previous owner. Mine has nice long battery cables!

10) Roof leaks from luggage racks that were never installed correctly. - Factory defect or have been tampered with. Never heard of others with issues nor did mine have issues!

There are 10 of the reasons that come to mine immediately. Yes, it is up for sale and it cannot go away fast enough! If I had not actually put money into it I would have sent it to the scrap yard long before wasting time and money trying to turn it into a decent vehicle. What was the old saying? I'm gone Insane!

Hello All,

First post on here but I thought I would provide a little insight as to what I've figured out with the N45 hitch recall.
I have an 05' Liberty Limited 3.7l v6 that I just picked up a few weeks ago for a heck of a cash deal.
First thing I did was check the recalls which it had three, and take it in to the dealership. I ended up getting free front ball joints, a bracket on the transmission for the PARK PAWL anchor, and the N45 recall to have the hitch inspected/installed.
So as many other people have, I ended up with a new MOPAR hitch to protect the gas tank (they did not install anything to do with wiring for lights/breaks on a trailer) but I was curious what the class of the hitch was for the addition of a motorcycle carrier.
I'll add that my Jeep did NOT come with the OEM tow package from the factory.
The dealer was unable to give me an answer for liability reasons with Chrysler, stating that the hitch is not actually meant for towing according to Chrysler.
Other people have found this lovely gem of information before me, but after talking to a nice woman at Chrysler I found out that the hitch they added is only technically rated for 2000# (200# tongue weight if I'm not mistaken) making it a Class II with a 2" receiver which is not enough for me to put an 80# motorcycle carrier on with my 583# Sportster.
So after talking with her further I discovered that if you:
A) Install the proper wiring harness for lights (7 pin for breaks is possible but requires a line up to the battery I believe).
B) Install a Class III or Class IV hitch instead of the Class II MOPAR one they installed.
C) Install the OEM (or aftermarket) Transmission cooler that comes on the Liberty with the tow package.

You will essentially have the factory tow package capable of handling up to 7500# (not consistently) and around or under 750# on the tongue of the hitch.
Please correct me if I am wrong on any of my numbers, the 7500# is a maximum capability and most definitely not meant to be done frequently.
From what I can tell ~5000# with the Class III hitch is pretty stable for general use with the vehicle.

So to those who got the MOPAR recall hitch, you may want to upgrade if you're pulling a trailer often.
If anyone has gotten the recall hitch and has had success with more weight than 2000# I'd love to hear your input, especially if you've used a motorcycle carrier on it.

That's been my experience so far, only owned a Jeep for a couple weeks now and after the TLC I've put in I think I've got a a pretty sweet ride for a while to come.
Thanks to everyone on the forums who has already helped me diagnose problems, makes for a much easier owner experience.

Cheers
-Joe

You won't have any problems pulling what you want
I've pulled a trailer with mowing equip. numerous times with zero issue
Typical load is the trailer (open with treated wood *even heavier than what comes stock* and angle iron, ~2,000lbs), **** walk-behind (~600lbs), blower (~40-50lbs), weed eater (~30lbs), push mower (~60lbs), and small tools all add up to around 2,800lbs and my KJ pulls it easily
I have no towing package or anything other than the Mopar hitch receiver
So I'd say (others may have different opinions) that if you're wanting to pull 3,000lbs then go ahead

Forget the technicalities, as far as I know the Mopar hitch is a 3 inch class 3.

Yes for pulling you are "suppose" to have the fan clutch cooling system for it to be acceptable according to Chrysler.
Pulling a bike on a light trailer... is no problem for the KJ!!

Thanks for the input jeeplib05, definitely assures me on the ability of the MOPAR hitch. I don't think I'd have any problem with a trailer and my motorcycle, my main concern is if I try to use a motorcycle carrier that puts all of the weight onto the hitch/rear axle and does not make contact with the ground.
At that point I believe the only number that matters is the tongue weight of the hitch (and that the carrier is rated for the proper weight obviously).

LibertyTC-
You may have a class III hitch on yours, is that the one the dealer installed? Mine does not look like that, mine looks like this without he additional wiring plug to the left of the hitch (bad online pic, sorry):

http://www.rockcrawler.com/reviews/jeep/liberty_2002/gastank.jpg

But I'd definitely want to be 1000% sure about my weight limits on the hitch before putting my motorcycle that is worth more than the Jeep on the back haha.
As far as carriers go I'm leaning towards this model or a slightly more expensive one:

Hitch Mounted Steel Motorcycle Carrier MCC-600 | Discount Ramps

If anyone has managed to get a Sportster or heaver (583# dry) bike on the back with one of these carrier I'd love to hear what your setup is.
Thanks!

All hitches I have seen out there in the world all look the same, Mopar would not have some made one way and others another .
As far as hauling a Sporty on the hitch, it would hold it, but your rear is going to be dragging

Not to disagree at all but the hitch they put on your Jeep looks to be a bit more hefty than the one my dealer installed on mine the other day, it only has the front and back with full welds on it and not the full sides like most aftermarket ones I've seen. And it also has the "ellipse" shaped rolled steel chain hookup instead of 3/16" sheet steel with holes in it like yours.

As far as the dragging with the weight of the bike I was hoping that some rear airbags that I've heard of would do the trick to save me from bottoming out too often.
Thanks,

In my opinion, those hitch carriers are no good for anything heavier than a moped. Just get a cheap trailer if you want to bring a real motorcycle along. Your local Craigslist will have plenty of them.
