I have a 2007 liberty with the 3.7l engine. I am going to purchase a boat and was wondering what everyone pulls and about the max weight a liberty can tow safely.

Helps a lot if you have the heavy duty cooling (mechanical fan plus the electric fan) and trailer brakes.

The heavy duty cooling fan shroud can be found here on eBay and you can purchase a Hayden fan clutch from places like Summit Racing and the nylon fan from Mopar Wholesale. Drill down to your year and then select Cooling System, then search for Viscous Fan.

The trailer brakes require a 7-pin round harness - there are OEM harnesses still out there but hard to find. You'd probably need what's called a 'supplemental harness' if you don't have a factory-installed EVIC - and those harnesses are even harder to come by. Check eTrailer.com for a harness to get you going.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Bob! I was going to post this very question here today. My '02 does not have heavy duty cooling and have been looking for what I need as we are shopping for a larger camper. I was unaware of the 2k limit on standard 3.7 and passed up one with a tow package when I got my liberty. Those parts and adding an external trans cooler I guess should be all I need to do.
I just finished the brake controller and wiring.

No worries!

You already have an external trans cooler - it's in front of your radiator and condenser running along the entire bottom behind the grill. Two lines from your trans run along the right side of your engine and into and out of the cooler.

To REALLY keep your ****** happy get a replacement radiator that has the in-radiator trans cooler in the right side tank. Most replacement rads for '02 - 03 models will have it. You can see how I plumbed the stock lines to the external cooler into the radiator cooler in this post: Install of the HD fan and in-radiator trans cooler.

Enjoy!

I ordered all I need for the heavy cooling. Should be here in the next couple days. Does the extra fan and shroud make it any harder to get to the oil filter?

yes it's a bit harder but still pretty easy to do. You might want to get a socket for the oil filter instead of the rubber tool.

Thanks. I've been able to get my hand on the filter through the bottom of the bumper and turn it by hand so far.

Yea, the filter is a bit of a pain. You can get to it to unscrew it pretty easy - but getting out from under the Jeep without emptying the oil out of the filter is the real challenge. I've just resigned myself to a little extra cleanup after the oil changes :freak3:

don't worry you'll get the catch over time ;)

I don't do it by myself because well, I'm not even close to being a mechanic but my friend do it with me for beer and food ( yay ) and once you know hot, it's quick and easy.

Installed the hd shroud and fan and so far all seems ok but.... Could not get the electric fan to come on. It works with power applied from the battery and even plugging in my old fan it will not come on. Is it commanded by the AC switching on or by temp? I've read the relays go bad in these quite often but never noticed any problems. Coincidence? Temp stays the same as before and towed my pop up with no problem so far.

Mine is NOT a 3.7L but a CRD. I have towed a lot with it, in Europe and in the US. I know how to drive with a trailer and in any weather conditions. My last big trip was from DC to El Paso TX, I stopped of at a CAT scale and weighed in at 10280lbs, 2300 miles that way. Average 16-19mpg depending on the terrain. Correctly loaded and knowing what to do in all situations, remaining calm, you can tow whatever you feel is comfortable.

Trial and error is learn from someone else's screw ups. You'd be a master if you avoided my screw ups.
