Wiring and relays

Hi guys. I have a quick question about wiring in a relay. Am I safe to assume the I can use a smaller gauge wire, 18 - 20, going from the relay to the switch only? My thinking is that the switch is only turning on the relay and will not be getting the power draw as the relay will. The rest of the circuit is getting 14 gauge.
