Too bad the rear window regulators barely break. Most of the time it's the fronts since the get the most use. I barely let my rears down.

I rarely see the fronts break. We replace 10-15 rear regulators on KJs a month. They always fail.

Doesn't seem to be that way around here, at least posted on this site.

How are the KK's regulators holding up? Better, worse, about the same?

My front driver side failed on my '06. No failures on the '05 or '04, nor my cousin's '02.

No problems so far with the KK regulators. I think they've got them figured out finally.:D

Doesn't sound right at all, maybe in a year. Was talking to a buddy on mine that works at the only Jeep dealership here in town(of about 350,000 people) and they have only done 4 since Jan 1st of this year and have sold about 3500 or so Liberty's over the last 7 years.I've done 1 on a KJ and 1 on a WJ since Jan 1st here where I work.

My '02 KJ has never had a failed regulator and they get used all the time since I do smoke.

It doesn't sound right, but is. Ive had the rear regulators replaced a total of 6 times. Never a front. Once for the passengers side, and the other 5 on the drivers side. The last one failed within 4 months, and the window couldn't have been up/down, more than a dozen times.

From what I've read here, it is most prevelant on the '05-'06 models, and may even be worse in the hot climates such as AZ where I live. Plastic - of any kind - just doesn't do well here.

OP, thanks for the link. I'll be definately looking into this...

I'm pretty sure the guy who makes them is in the process of fabricating front ones too. and I've seen plenty of kjs around town with duct taped rear windows mostly rear left for some reason. most likely coincidence. My rear left is being held up with zip ties from inside the door to avoid tacky look of a taped window.

Thanks for the link kjweston, I ordered one last night. I like that he has the write-up on how to replace it on the eBay page, something that's been sadly lacking here as so many folks have claimed to have replaced them. It's was also nice to confirm that it was the regulator that broke as I can hear those tubes rattling in the aft door frame when I open and close the door.

My left rear window is also being held up by zip ties.

Mine is an '02 and this is the first time for this issue.

Thanks again...

All this talk about window regulators makes me think back...

Didn't the XJs have this issue too, later in its life?

Crank windows wouldn't be so bad if they made them where within just 3 or 4 cranks, the whole window was down, like back in the day. But now it takes 10-15 (SERIOUSLY, I've driven cars like that before) to completely lower the window. Annoying!

BOth my rears have now failed (actually waiting for dealer to get the part in to fix one of them right now). Neither front has failed. KJ around the corner from me has also had both rears fail, neither fronts failed. What's really interesting is we hardly ever roll the rear windows...normally just the fronts. Sometimes i roll the rears down just a few inches to get some extra airflow during summer when it's hotter than hell...but during winter the rears NEVER go down.

At any rate, this reminds me of the GM Corvette and Firebird/Trans Am headlight motor problem. The motor doens't technically fail, but the cheap plastic gears eventually break. GM doesn't sell the gears, only the entire $200 motor assembly. A guy started selling his own replacement gears made of brass and he sells them for like $30 each.

something Ive been doing, not sure if it helps or not.. I never use the auto down feature since it takes the window down and bottoms it out then holds it there for a few sec before it lets off. I put it down and stop just before it bottoms out so it doesnt torque up the regulator. When going up I try to stop it as soon as it gets to the top so, again, it doesnt torque the regulator.

Dude you so nailed that!

But, don't forget the KJ has that nice rear window switch defeat button!!! So does our PT Cruiser, boy does that save on the rear window game.

Hey indieaz,
We just had this issue on my wifes Liberty here in Maricopa.(south of Phoenix) I called around looking for the regulator & most of the stealerships told me they are back ordered due to demand, saying I will need to order & wait 2-3 weeks...Unable to accept this answer, I continued calling stealerships untill I found what i was looking for. Apparently thinking ahead, Superstition Jeep stock piled them. When i called they had many on hand, & I got my wife in there the next day to get it fixed. Give them a shout...
