I have noticed the major problem with my gas milage is that driving around 50 kills it. I only get about 14-16MPG doing 50, while when Im going about 65+, I can get over 22MPG. It seems no matter how far I drive, I still fill up in the same amount of time.

We oilburners have noted the same thing. In our case, the reason is twofold - we're blessed with 5th gear OD that kicks in at 58 MPH, and above 2000 engine rpm the common rail injection system drops out one of the two pilot injections. Doesn't hurt either that max torque begins around 1800 rpm.

The Liby is a box, not the most aero vehicle around. And it sits up fairly high, and it has big wheel openings. That is the obvious. Even with stock tires, its a bit underpowered so the engine works harder to move it down the road.

Some simple tricks which probably won't suprirse anyone. Is the sweet spot for fuel effeciency is 45-65mph. Anything above 65 and millage starts to drop off noticably. Rabbit starts and agressive acceleration really eats into millage. Driving smoother and calmer can get you as much as 2 MPG's.

Minor mods you can make to get better effeciency. Forced air induction.. Those K&N Cone filter mods do little to help. Yes more air in, but warmer air in so really all is canceling out. You need to bring COOL air into the engine. Your engine is an air pump. Hot air is thinner, cold air is thicker. So when the engine compresses the air, there is more to compress (bigger force in the bang, more HP). So engine doesnt have to work as hard to produce same power. This can be done by a simple household dryer duct (flexable aluminum duct work) get it at Lowes, and cut a whole on the side of your airbox.

Air Filters - again your engine is a air pump.. If dirty filter, makes engine work harder. There has always been a debate over K&N. Does it work, does it clean the air. Basically its a two sided coin. Higher Flow / Cleaner Air. A higher flow filter is less restrictive (so more air (and other stuff) get through easier. Cleaner air has more filtering and is very restrcitive (making your engine work harder). I guess depends on how you drive your vehicle.

More expensive mods: again your engine is an air pump. Air in, Air out. the better it can breath, the least hard it has to work to produce same HP. So getting exhaust out of engine. Exhaust, headers.. Now this gets into is it cost effective to do? $500 for a catback exhaust that flows better will it save you $500 in gas saving? Eh.. I dono.. I know the headers probably were not the smartest mod I did to my Jeep. other than to say lookie lookie. But to the wife I said it will save gas. On the highway I have hit 22mpg. I am curious if I can get better on this next long trip I have coming up. I havent tried the Forced Air Induction mod on super long trip but have hit 20MPG on a 100 mile round trip before.

Don't have to spend 500 on exhaust,:whip: replacing the muffler is all you need to do, rest is 2.5 inch anyways so no change at all. Plus when it comes down to it, it doesn't help that much at all anyways, maybe a 2-3/10s of a gallon or so I would say
Mine actually runs better / smoother and gets great mileage at 70-72
60-65 it doesn't like at all

I do believe i have 4:10 gears in the rear

4.10 is the diff ratio (Crown wheel and pinion ratio). If you have a 4.10 ratio in the rear and a 3.73 ratio in the front and you engage 4wd, you will break a prop or the transfere case. Reason for this is that your front wheels will turn faster than the rear and you will brake something! Just a FYI.

I was going to say that bad mileage and jeep are partners in bed.

Shit mileage is what you get for a bullet proof drive train and a
vehicle that out performs all other SUV's in its class (except in
mileage lol).

I get shit mileage but its worth it. I would like to see a Yota Rav4 or
a Onda CRV follow me where I go. Those vehicles crap their pants
at the sight of off-road terrain. My jeep says BRING IT!

I like that part. Makes a good bumper sticker.

lol thanks chill. I'm not a fan of bumper sticker, but I like windows stickers >:|

In my opinion the escape would have been my next choice of vehicle. Good mileage and they have a good track record minus some rad bracket recalls and power transfer unit seal leaks.

As I said I think the Magnaflow exhaust kit and/or headers is not an effective mod since the cost out weighs savings.

You must be registered for see images

As for as your speed comment. I can probably squeeze 70 out of it with little drop in MPG. but you go beyond 72 and I am getting no better than 19MPG. For steady smooth cruising 65 to me is the sweet spot for my setup. And I think I have the best in intake and exhaust setup money can buy. I am hoping with this forced air induction to be in the 25 MPG range on the long trip.

I am only getting 12 to 13 in city drive and 16 to 17 on highway for my 06 Renegade 4x4. I had an Escape 4x4 which got 25 to 28 on highway. Jeep is not doiing it homework let its customer down in this aspect.

Uhhh, you do know what chassis the Ford Escape is based on, right? Ford Escort.:pp:

Would you really want to take a Ford Escort off road?:freak3:

@retmil

I'm a ex-ford technician. I can assure you that the escape is nothing like.... (hold on I'm laughing still..).....An escor.....t lol

While they may have some similarities you are trying to compare apples and oranges. The escape has a frame/uni-body very close to the liberties (but still closer to a uni-body). Having worked on them everyday for years tends to get you very familiar with them.

I do not like them because they have a week 4X4 system, there is no transfer case just a very small PTU (power transfer unit) that is bolted to the side of the transmission and has a drive shaft going to the rear of the escape. This is prone to leaking.

thanks for the pic Ry'n Jen

I'm getting 20-23 MPG with country roads driving. Yes, Jeep is not gasoline miser, but it is not bad at all IMO. Anyone who wants to switch Jeep for Ford got Jeep by mistake :)

Actually, I got rid of my Ford Explorer due to the terrible gas mileage and am pleased with the INCREASE in MPG I get with my Jeep. Brand new (to me) my Ex got 19 highway, 17 around town. By the time I got rid of it, it was getting between 13-14 and maybe 15 highway. Jeep's getting 18.5 average, 21-22 highway :)

I cant speak for engine differences but the Libby sits higher off the ground, and is taller. Its about as aerodynamic as a brick with monster truck wheels.

I saw a dodge nitro that someone lowered. I wonder what type of millage they are getting.

The Escape is not based on the Escort in any way, it is based on a Mazda platform (626)...

anyway...

The Escape blows off-road, i had a 2001 and it couldn't get out of it's own way even on the beach, there is no comparison to the Liberty.

I read the original post and all of the replies but I don't think I saw a single one that asked the question about how you're calculating your gas mileage. So, how are you? and how do you know if your speedometer/odometer is reading correctly? That can throw off your gas mileage.

For the speedometer/odometer to read correctly and the transmission to shift correctly you need to set the true tire size within the BCM (engine computer).

My stock Liberty used to give me 22MPG at best. With a 2.5" lift & LT245/75R16's and stock gears (true tire size programmed into the BCM) it gets about 20 MPG.

I never had the KJ reprogramed
Also never had the TJ reprogramed
I use the old fashion method of GPS to know me speed
then use this % to figure miles driven
And how many gallons I pumped in
This will or does tell me my MPG
