Hello KJ community!

My father acquired a Jeep KJ Renegade 2003, with a 2.8L diesel engine.
On the user manual, containing also VIM and other info, it says the following: DAIMLERCHRISLER CO JEEP KJ LE 85 30

Several mechanics have been unable to identify the maker of the engine. The answers we get are either:
1) VM engine (as indicated by Wikipedia as well)
2) Non-VM, probably german engine.
3) Hybrid of the two, made up by engineers who couldn't make either work and cobbled an engine together (this from a self-proclaimed former Jeep engineer).

Now, besides the frustration of not knowing who the heck made the engine, we'd also like to know if the car has a timing belt (mechanic 3 indicated that the gasoline KJs from that year had none).

Attached are pictures of the engine for you to identify.

Thank you so much in advance for your time and help.

Alan

Well your location puts you in the states so unless by some big mistake you got a import CRD it's not a '03 model year as the only model years a CRD was offered in the states was '05 and '06 and none were ever built as a Renegade.

It could be a cobbled engine swap which would be illegal in all 50 states if the VIN shows model year '03.

Grill shape seems to be 02-04 era, flares are renegade flares, and it's certainly a CRD engine in there. Maybe he's not actually in the US?

Definitely the VM Diesel engine with timing belt.

Looks to me like it is the earlier 2.5 capacity Export model with a fixed vane Turbo....the later 2.8 models had the variable vane Turbo...have a good look at the Tubo to see what type it is.

Best is to go to the "Liberty CRD Love the Torque" section at:
LOST JEEPS • Index page

They should be able to provide some more advice and how to decode the VIN properly!

05 and 06 are the only MY that had the CRD in the US and you said yours is an 03 CRD.

Could be that someone bought your jeep overseas and moved to the US and had the jeep shipped here (?)

First thing to do is go to jeep.com and under "owners services" you want to order a "build sheet" and they will e-mail it to you. (not sure how long it takes) Or you can go to any jeep dealer and get one instantly. Either way, it is free and will tell you what exactly was in your jeep when it left the factory.

That would be where to start in my opinion.

Anther easy way to find out, see if it has rear fogs if it does then its from over seas. Look at the bottom portion of the tail lights if there are reflectors then its a US spec unit, if its clear red with a bulb its an overseas unit.
