Tow hook idea

On the 05-07 KJ's, even if you cut out the tabs above the hooks, the strap seems to make quite a bit of contact with the bumper cover, so would adding maybe 1/8" to 1/4" nut to lower them have a bad effect on their use???

Yes,more leverage on the bolts and more likely to fail.The OEM tow hooks(and mounting area's) are only rated for 5000lbs straight pull when mounted/torqued correctly.

The only issue I could see is that you would effectively be creating a lever with the hook being further away from the frame. In the right conditions, (IE: if you try to drop it too far) it could possibly cause enough leverage to tear away from the frame. Of course, that's if you drop it a lot, just a little bit...it could still work out for you.
