Start of my bumper build....completed

So after a few years of me saying I'm gonna build one....finally working on it now.

I'm gonna use 6inch c channel to build it up. No winch mount as of now. But that's why I have a welder.

Here's a mock up. It will be like the one All Js made a long time ago. Simple yet effective. But it will be a stubby bumper like scouts. Sorry no ARB for me. I can't justify grand to the wifey. And its too big for my taste

Nice! Can't wait to see how it turns out. I know what you mean about dropping that much money on a bumper, Im trying to get into welding myself so I can fab my own stuff, seems a lot cheaper that way. Best of luck I'll be watching!

ARBs maybe big but with what mines hit I would of been in the body shop at least 5 times now replacing the whole front end
Plus with under 300 bucks I paid for it back in 05 its paid for itself a thousand times over
Not sure how the law looks at bumpers in Texas but here if it came with a bumper that was full width then it has to have one full width. yes lots of people get by with not doing it that way but know of one guy who's been warned a couple of times now

Looks like a good start

Tom good point on the texas law. Just called my buddy who is a Texas State Trooper and he gave me a long penal code about how texas does don't even have bumper laws and they can't give out tickets for missing bumpers. BUT you MUST have a forward facing plate....crazy.

Wife says I should do it stubby. But I kinda like both stubby and full width. We don't do much offroading in the KJ that's what the TJ is for. Mainly beach stuff and deer lease.

I grabbed these photos off the web. If owners want me to take them down just let me know.

I like the second one with the stinger, the first one is a bit too plain for my tastes

But why do you have a huge wooden ***** hanging off your truck...:happy175: I would also do stubby. Try to build in some D-ring mounts also...

After a grider crapped out...I'm done for the day, which means pictures. I'm building it like a rock lizard bumper when they used factory turn signals. It will have the angled edge down like it too.

I'm going to be mounting it to my existing home made and well built front hitch. I'm sure it will be over built just like the hitch I made.

I'm going for full width bumper just in case I decide to hit something. Gonna have to wait for Wednesday until I get off work and exchange the grinder.

Winch mount or no winch mount.

Well see that's the good thing about having a welder and making your own bumper...I will be adding it at a later date. I want the bumper and winch to cradle each other. The winch will be recessed in the bumper to help center of gravity. I'm looking at a XRC8. 8k should be plenty?

Here it is so far. Needs end caps and turn signal area done and some d ring mounts but I like it so far. Even the wife likes it.

Thanks for the complements.

Its welded to my front hitch that I made a few yeats back. Thats attached to where the factory tow hooks mount up. The entire front hitch is 3/8 inch steel and the mounting for the bumper is 1/4 angle. All seams beavled and cap welded with 250amp mig. The c channel is welded to the angle iron. Then spaces filled with 12ga sheet.

I'm planning on painting it with rustolem hammered black after I get all the welds prettied up and smoothed out where needed to be.

I might do a grill guard bar like the rocklizard bumpers. I just don't really know where to get the pipe bent. Might use 1.5 tubing for it.
