Hi, this sound has been bugging me, ever since I bought my 04" KJ.
Sounds like it's coming from the front right wheel. And it's much louder, noticeable when braking... OK, so then I replaced the brake rotor, and pads, with almost brand new ones, that I took off my 02" with a blown motor. The pads and rotor have only a few hundred miles on them. Then I noticed, I could hear the same sound, very slightly, when the Jeep is just coasting.

Cant be the rotor or pads, I replaced them. Could it be a wheel bearing?
Or could the sound be coming from another brake rotor?
But it sure sounds like the the right front wheel!

The rear brake rotors and pads are new. Haven't gotten around to replacing the left from rotor and pads yet.

But it sure sounds the the right front wheel:emotions34:
This sure has me baffled:icon_confused:

ANY ideas?
Please, it's driving me nuts!

Things to start checking are the CV and Intermediate Shaft on the right side
also the rear CV on the front driveshaft even though its more or less right under the drivers seat

Thank You for your reply. How do I go about checking the CV joints for problems?
I don't see any obvious rips in the boots. The only experience I have with them, was years ago with a ripped open boot on a 81' Ford Escort. In that case, it was an old car. And I cut off the boot, cleaned out all the old grease, repacked it, and replaced it with a split boot, that didn't require removal of the CV joint. That got me though, until I got rid of the car.

Any links on to how to check them?
Also, they don't make noise while turning, like in front wheel drive cars.

Thanks again!

check the tire. make sure it's round, no bubbles or depressions.

Make sure the caliper bolts and caliper bracket bolts are torqued and loctited properly. I had brake caliper bracket bolt come out once and it rubbed a hole in the rim and cracked it. Or the caliper could just be a little loose.

After some research. It sounds like a bad wheel bearing. Need to jack it up, and try rocking the wheel. I hope it's something I can do myself?

^^ I'd do this as well, it's probably got enough mileage on it that you want to keep an eye on them. I had a humming thump type sound and spent a lot of money and couldn't track it down. Everything I did needed replacing anyways, so not like I actually wasted money. It sounded like it was comming from the front, but it ended up being a combination of the rear axle shift bearings and the grooves that were worn into the shafts.

OP, there's a ton of things it could be. Tires cupped/feathered, sticking caliper, damaged rotor/chunked pad, bearings, or cv/up joint. I'd check the front brakes, especially if gets worse when you're stopping. When was the last time the slide pins were greased? Sounds like you could have a sticking caliper/collapsed hose. It wouldn't take long to warp the rotor. Does your steering wheel shimmy?

Not the wheel bearings or brakes

I replaced the brake disc and pads first. Didn't make a difference. I just jacked her up (it finally quit raining) and the front wheels don't wiggle at all. So not a wheel bearing... Although, when I rotate the right front wheel, I hear a noise, from the drive shaft. Like it has some slop in it. I still have my 02' in my garage. Going to jack it up, rotate the wheel, and see if I hear the same sound, or feel the same slop on it. My 03' (with the noise) has 147K miles on it. My 02' has 155K on it, with a blown motor. On a tight budget, perhaps the drive shafts can be swapped? CV boots are intact. I have off work tomorrow, how can I check the things you mentioned? Thanks!
