I'm guessing you have a lot of winter salt to contend with? If so I'd expect to replace all the small parts, and I'd have new cables in hand just in case they are corroded and stiff. Since they work inside the rotor there's a good chance the little drum in it is FUBARED. New pads and rotors are quite likely on the menu as well. Always better to throw away a set of pads with 1/2 life left than to put them back in contact with new rotors.

Got new rotors/pads too...
The KJ spent the first 7 years of it's life in FL...so there is some surface rust but the parking brake mechanism still moves fine it seems.

Hell, mine came from FL also! Musta been near the ocean, as it has rust in places I've never seen on Yankee rigs, much less Arkies. A good friend ran shops in FL for years, said the rust from salty breezes and fogs put Nawthern stuff to shame.

You don't have to pull axle on Jeep. It uses two separate "shoes" held together with the parts listed in the other thread (excellent how-to, by the way). Other vehicles, my 04 Silverado on the other hand, have one(1) big band with two patches of brake lining on opposing sides. The axles must come out to get the single band on and off. *****.

There is a super easy trick to remove/install those single band shoes on GM's,never have taken a axle out yet.Now those damn Toyota's I'd rather have a root canal done without being numbed 1st.

Somewhere on this forum I think is a thread about a rear wheel backing plate with aluminum rivets that let go in the salty rust belt. Pictures with mods. Maybe on Jeepforum? Maybe that's the cause for the axle pull. Worth looking at while you're there. Wish I could be more specific but all the forums are blurring together for me.

Is there a measurement or something to check to make sure I have the parking brakes adjusted right?

Turn em out till you feel drag, then loosen till no drag. Or, apply and release as you adjust out till it feels right.
