do you mean the CRD auto box? (545RFE)

Would the 42RLE be preferable to a manual? I do like the idea of the 6 speed manual (have one in my Audi)

Yes.

Re: 42RLE vs. NSG370 6-Speed Manual, in this case, it all comes down to whether you want to shift your own gears or have a computer do it for you. :)

The guys on here are only talking about the '05-'06 2.8 163hp CRD.

The 2.5 was never sold in the US.

The 2005+ is less reliable then the 2002-2004 models imo. After 2005 a crapload of electronics was added, with that an electrical EGR and a FCV.

You cannot say CRD troubles from US owners are the same for everyone all over the world. Over in the US the diesel is different.

guys, I've been reading a local forum and they seem to say the CRD 2.8 is a reliable engine, but the 2.5 is less so

when folks on here say the CRD breaks a lot - are they talking about 2.5 in particular, or both?

If you go to the CRD section in Lostjeeps.com you will see that the general consensus is that the 2002/2003 KJs are more reliable than the later models ie. when the 2.8 L came out. Main problems with the 2.8 L models is that jeep decided to save some money and not bother fitting a lift pump in the fuel tank anymore and also problems with hardware fitted for Emissions Control, finally
electric window regulators....which Jeep have now acknowleged as a problem.
Also as pointed out above...the five speed autobox is very neat but is a complex computer-controlled device which can be problematic.
That said, if my 2002 2.5 CRD got stolen or written off, I would seriously look at getting a clean second hand 2.8 L with the auto box and this time in LTD trim as apposed to my current Sport trim.
I do not believe that the CRD breaks a lot...just make sure you always use low sulphur diesel and allow the Turbo to cool down after a long drive before switching off. Most of the South African forums are pretty much against any form of Jeep product but that has more to do with the poor dealer service than with the vehicles themselves!:disgust:
