What are ya'll doing w/ your old CV joint?

Tossed it. It's crap now.

In a little while, I'll order another joint kit to keep on the shelf so I have it ready next time. At $45 for the whole joint kit, why buy just a boot?

Didn't look like it to me. Surfaces were worn and scored from the dirt that got into the grease; if there was rust from lack of grease, you'd spend forever and a day cleaning it off, just to have the surfaces out of spec.

Not worth it, imho.

Did anyone find grease on their undercarriage after changing their CV?

After a week and a half of driving, I just checked and found some grease flung around.
There was a small chunk on a small part the boot and the metal edge.
I couldn't find a hole/slit and it didn't look torn.

Cleaned it all up but I'll check it again in a day or two..

Ya a little came out of the end of my boot after but then nothing. Keep an eye on it though losing too much might be a sign of a bad seal there.

mmmm I just reread CzarKJ's post that it came out of the end of the boot except the grease on mine did not seem like it was coming our from the end of the boot.

it looked like it was coming out from the bearing end of the boot.

urgh....
just checked it and found a small slit.
I didn't see any grease after the test drive right after installing it.

You must be registered for see images

It's close to the shaft and I think I can put a rubber patch over it since it's not an area that flexes much.
It's a few mm long. about 3-4mm or .1".
I don't think i lost a lot of grease.

Thoughts?

patched up the small slit on the boot.
so far it's holding.
Used some silicon adhesive and a bicycle patch.
The real test would be driving it up to phx on a 2-3 hour drive.

I'm not looking through all 20 pages, but has anyone replaced the other end, the diff end, of the front DS? I have pulled the cap off and removed the snap ring and it ain't sliding off. I pulled the boot down and there doesn't appear to be a clip or another snap ring. There's a lot of grease though and maybe I'm missing something? Anyhow, how the hell does this come off?

Don't know haven't done it but I'd suggest a bigger hammer since you are not reusing it. Can't be really different from the t case side.

I replaced both of mine. Just the snap ring on the end, so you need to hit it harder. I remember mine was a pita to get off, can't remember which end it was. Time to get out a bigger hammer!
