I am having both front and rear diff fluid changed. I read that you need an addtive for the rear if you have the Trac-Lok rear axle. I don't know if I have it. How do I tell? 2006 Renegade, 3.7l, Command Trac, ESP.

The Chrysler limited slip additive is required for the Trac-Lok.
AS Tom mentioned....TAG or "The build sheet" is important and all owners should have one and know if you have a Trac-Lok.
A copy can be obtained by calling Chrysler or dropping by the dealer with you VIN#.

Use GL5 it last longer than synthetics.
But still change out the rear diff fluid every 12,000 miles with Trac-Lok.
Otherwise expect to rebuild the clutche$ or install a Richmond Locker like TBJ.

When you open the rear diff it should be apparent if you have a Trac-Lok shouldn't it?

Open and Trac-lok look similar but...clutch pack is kinda hidden in-between the gearsets, so to the inexperienced flunky who may not work on Jeeps then what?
One thing is certain...you should know if you have a trac-lok before you go to any shop to ensure you got the right stuff, as running a posi without the friction modifier is certain death to your diff.

If you are not sure just add the friction modifier, it won't hurt an open diff.

I was under the understanding if you used Royal Purple Max-gear, It has the friction modifyer already added.

From their website::

All viscosities of Max-Gear are formulated with hypoid friction modifiers necessary for use in clutch or cone type differentials. No additional additives are necessary.

No need for any friction modifier for a '06+ KJ,no trash-loc was available or even a option for '06+ KJ's due to ESP and traction control.

Any model year '06 KJ,regardless of when it was built(in '05 or '06) has ESP and traction control and no option for trashloc.

My 06 was built 5/06, which really doesn't matter with the info TJKJ provided. Seeing how I don't have the trac-loc but I purchased the friction modifier should I have it added or just return it? I mean if I don't need it I hate to tell the guy working on my car to add if it is unnecessary. But if it is still a good idea to use it then I will. The mechanic who works on my cars does it as "side work", he works for a diesel truck repair shop so I dunno how knowledgeable he is on Chrysler products. Not to mention I don't know what types of fluids they have at the shop that are useable in the KJ. The owners manual specs 1 type of fluid for the front diff, and another type for the rear but the sticky thread "required fluid types" says ........

Since you do not have trac-lok , You will NOT have to add any friction modifier.
Just regular GL5 gear Lube and you are fine.
Most use 75W-90 if you are not towing anything.
However if you are towing the recommended GL5 will now be 75W-140
Hope that clarify's things .....

They just want YOU to loose sleep ....

Unless You treat Your KJ so bad ( someone would say ... properly) no need for 75W-140, it's thick and would add additional 'drag', particularly in the cold season. Just IMHO.

PS : I use 80W/90,GL-5 dino, but I do get it cheap...

If you tow anything or oddroad thicker gear oil is better.

Personnaly I run 85w-140 dino GL5,I like my diffs and could care less about mpg's.

I have ran the 75-140 for the last 130,000 miles with no ill effects, when the gears were swapped recently they still looked new
