Was on the highway today and a nice big stone comes flying and cracked the front window. (banghead)

Anybody have any idea where I should go to have it fixed?

Thanks,
Bennett

You could try your hand at finding one of those no deductable window shops that work for free.

They do exist, I've gone to one before.

EDIT: Take a picture, lets see it.

My insurance company directs me who to go to for glass. You might want to check that out first if you have comprehensive coverage.

I am on my 3rd windshield. Got each of them replaced for about 150-160 dollars, both with quality auto glass. PPG and Pilkington. Not worth the hassle of dealing with the insurance and having a claim on your record for 150 dollars.

First time I was following a semi too close. I should have known better. Second time someone threw a huge rock, surprised it didn't go right through the windshield. Hopefully, no more replacements anytime soon.

Triumph auto glass did mine for 150 and they seem to have a couple in WI.

I disagree - the whole point of having glass coverage is to cover when something like that happens. I don't know if it's the same everywhere, but in MA, glass coverage has a zero deductable, and since most people have insurance, glass is basically free. Glass places look at you like you have two heads if you go in and ask what it will cost without insurance.

For what it's worth, I don't think insurance companies use glass claims for much when dealing with "your record". Even break-ins and theft aren't really used for much (believe me, I had a car broken into three times in a 1 year period, and my insurance didn't go up a notch....I was surprised they didn't suspect me of fraud or anything, but the insurance rates didn't go up).

Now accidents and traffic violations on the other hand are definitely considered. If you rear-end somebody and it goes to insurance, your ins company sees you at fault and punishes you. So that would be the only case where I think there is some benefit to just paying for damages out of pocket. Same with if you low-speed crash your jeep into a tree, wall, curb, other stationary undamaged object.

If the vehicle was moving and caused damage, you are a higher risk driver. If the glass keeps breaking, that's not your fault (and a lot of glass places will repair/replace for free if you get a ding in a windshield that they replaced).

I guess it also depends on what deductible you have on your insurance. If you had a higher deductible to save a couple bucks on the ins (like me) then it would be well worth it to go through a glass company and not claim anything. I cross my fingers that I won't see another big stone again, since I never really thought I would have to replace my glass this often (2 times in the last year) due to Mr. Stone....

I just got my glass replaced by Henderson Glass and it cost me $156 out the door. I believe this is a Michigan based company because I could not find one in WI.

I was just thinking... The glass that came on my liberty from the factory has a tint strip on the top. Is that standard for all replacements?

Thanks,
Bennett

I think it is now Bennett. I recall someone else with an older Liberty that didn't have the visor wondering what it was and wondering why that was the only one he could get.

I need to replace mine too. I was driving down the freeway several months ago when this boulder came flying through the air from one or two cars in fron of me and hit the tint strip square with the rearview mirror. It started to crack right away before I could get it filled but now it has stopped and still is not in the field of view. I am holding off a little while until I can see it or until the second boulder hits it. ](*,)

I have State Farm and had a 250 deductible and could get it replaced for abot 175. I was pissed that it was cheaper to go out of pocket than to pay the lowest deductible I could get.

LOL. Everyone in this area gets their windshields replaced by Henderson Glass.

Mine doesn't need to be replaced yet, knock-on-wood.

Tri city glass does some good work bennett, they have a location in green bay, they will come and do it at your house for you. Otherwise Auto glass specialists do pretty good work also, i have used both of them in the past both companies will put in the window at your location. I would recommend one of those 2.

I recently got a star chip/hit/crack, and had it repaired for $40. I can still sort of see it. The guy quoted me $180 for a new windsheild.
Then someone told me, write down the license plate of a Fedex or UPS truck and say that, that truck, threw up the rock, striking you. Then they pass the bill onto them, through the insurance.

Yes the tint strip is standard on all glass made for the KJ's. I used to wholesale alot of autoglass in my 4 warehouses (about 4 million peices a year) and I have never seen a non tinted available from any manufacturer as of now, but they can build anything as long as you buy enough. Hope that answers you question.

We got it fixed!

Made the appointment Friday and it was fixed Saturday. Good as new again. My insurance company told me who to take it to.
