Today I thought id test out the full time 4x4 because of the rain and my bald ass tires.... when I put it into 2wd the Part time light came on. Then I put it in part time and the full time light came on..Then i put it in full time and all the lights went out. so now its in the 2wd position but the part time light is still on. Does this mean that some sensor is effed up or is it really in part time? I drove in a circle in a parking lot and it didnt really act like part time, but I just got it two days ago so im not sure how this one feels.....if its just the light stuck then ill be fine but if the t-case is stuck then im screwed. any help please?

Any tire scrub, barking?

Sounds like it's just the sensor...

ok well I dont hear the tire scrubbing so It must be back into 2WD. What do I do about the sensor then? is it a quick replacable one or is it a bi*** like the NSS in the cherokees.

Should be on the T case somewhere, can disconnect and clean it, that might work. Or just leave it disconnected.

Ive got a haynes repair manual at home, would that be in there at all?

Not to my knowledge. I have the same Haynes repair manual, and I believe I looked for it and it wasn't even mentioned.

My sensor did the exact same thing... then fixed itself. It seems to be a common problem with the KJ. If you do a google search for 'transfer case position sensor' without mentioning the vehicle, the first couple of hits are for the Liberty.

Over on LOSTKJS there is a thread about changing it out-- I don't remember and I can't search right now, but supposedly the sensor is on top of the transfer case, unscrews and can be reinserted WITHOUT removing or dropping the tcase. I looked at it when my sensor did this, and it looks like it might be difficult to reach up over the top of the t-case, but supposedly it can be done.

You might take it off road, put it in 4hi, back to 2wd, back to 4hi and the sensor might 'fix itself' like mine did.

I havent been on LOST since this summer so ill do some searching over there for a while. I did do a google search and it seems like its been a problem since the '90s with all jeeps. Im guessing it is something like the NSS where it just gets dirty and stuck. Thanks for all the help everyone

REMOVAL
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Disengage the transfer case position sensor connector
from the position sensor (2).
3. Remove the position sensor from the transfer case.
INSTALLATION
1. Inspect the o-ring seal on the transfer case position sensor. Replace the o-ring if necessary.
2. Install the transfer case position sensor into the transfer case. Torque the sensor to 27 N·m (20 ft.lbs.).
3. Engage the transfer case position sensor connector to the position sensor.
4. Lower vehicle.
5. Verify proper sensor operation.
