I've had my 02 Limited (75 k km/about 50 k mi) in Full Time 4WD for a couple of weeks, put it in 2WD today for a trip. I could tell it hadn't disengaged, then about 10 km later, still in town, it gave one heck of a CLUNK! taking off from a stoplight, and it had disengaged.

Anybody else ever experience that? Is it something I should have checked out right away? It's going in for oil change in another 5000 kms.

Yeah mine has made an awful clunk that shakes the Jeep when shifting out of full-time. It's done it more than once too. And mine is brand new. So who knows whats going on inside that t-case...

Owners Manual

If you flip through your owners manual, it states that you may have to shift out of drive, into neutral, then back to drive to make sure 4WD is off.

I have never had a "clunk" with the Jeep, but I have had the clunk with my old Rodeo. I think it is the nature of the beast.

Mine does the same thing. Usually it's when I pull into the driveway in Fulltime because of snow then switch into 2wd the next morning to leave. It'll make a pop or clunk after I back up then turn to go forward.

I've had that on other 4x4's. I was told to put them in reverse for about 100 yards. That always seemed to work. But these were manual gearboxes and going from part-time 4hi to 2hi.......
