02 Engine Knock

Hi all. Have found this forum super helpful, unfortunately the day has come for my first post.

I have an 02 Liberty Sport 3.7l with 213,000km

After about an hour of idling waiting to cross the U.S. Border the engine developed a 'knock'. Seems to be coming from the drivers side. Speeds up / slows down with engine RPM. Is always there whether engine is hot or cold. Check Oil light came on about 2 hours of driving after knock developed (Oil and oil filter was changed 1.5 months ago). It has since gone off. Also the computer is showing P0325 Knock Sensor #1.

The engine seems to be running fine, no sluggishness etc.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Worst case it's a rod knocking. When they go the engine might have holes in it.

So a bad knock sensor can actually cause knocking?

Yep, look up "octane knock". The knock sensor will ****** ignition timing before your ear ever gets a chance to hear it. Without the sensor working, you may hear an engine make a knock sound (like marbles in the cylinders) when under a load, especially if running a cheaper grade of gas than what's required. The knock sensor compensates for lower octane gas by retarding the timing as needed. Get the k.s. fixed first, before assuming the worst; rod knock or valve train failure.

I agree with the knock sensor idea - but those things are a pain to get to under the intake manifold. Ugh...
