I have a 2007 liberty sport 4x4. My transmission just went out on me at 150,000 miles. My mechanic said he can get me a used transmission, with 43,000 miles on it for $2,200 (including labor).

Would it be better to get a rebuilt transmission, rather than a used one? Are their known issues with the transmissions in these Jeeps? My concern is I buy a used one, and have the same issue again. I've heard that if you buy rebuilt, they will usually fix known issues with the transmissions. Any insight on this?

Also, I'm in San Jose, CA. If you know where to get a rebuilt transmission, let me know!

I just went through the same thing. I got it rebuilt by a local shop for about 3 grand. A junkyard one would've been roughly the same price as what you quoted. It's much better than it was stock.

IMO -do you really think there is a Jeep with 43kmiles? no! well ive been lied to too many times about mileage!!

rebuilt seems the way to go! warranty is a must!

good luck!

I use myCarFax to put the vin numbers in to check the service history and recorded milage. MyCarFax is not car fax it is intended to be used to keep track maintenance plus update it. I have a empty slot so I enter the vehicles vin to see if it matches the reported info. Kept me from buying a transmission that looked good with mileage but the owner before he wrecked took it to the dealer several times with transmission trouble.
But some times there is next to no data

Whoa! Who is getting $2200 for transmission? Is that installed?
Used with 124k miles $500 shipped , 77k $348 + 256 shipping, on Hollander parts com.
$700 and up for better mileage.
Unless I've looked it up wrong.
There's also knowing it was rebuilt and a warranty. Dunno. Hard call either way

The ****** doesn't have to be from a Jeep - it could be from any one of a number of Chrysler products, so the 43,000 mile figure isn't really out of line.

I bought a transmission with 34,000 on it and have since put just over 100,000 miles on it. It's been great - no troubles at all. I have it serviced at a very good transmission shop near me every 30,000 miles and they told me at the last service that it still looks and shifts like new.

Your mileage may vary (pun intended...) but a ****** with that many miles on it has just gotten started in its service life if you ask me.

I bought a used transmission with under 50,000 miles on it with a small warranty and installed it in my backyard.

It's been perfect (knick on wood) for over 30,000 miles.

Used was good but I got mine installed for $1400. Mine had ~ 30k miles if i remember correctly. It wasn't really a great trans since it was first installed...but it's at least got an extra 80k miles on it now. That being said...how long are you keeping this Jeep??

my second transmission had about 40k miles/$1800 and it lasted longer than my original. it finally died and had it rebuilt with warranty.

$2200 is close to what i paid for rebuilt so if i had the choice id go with rebuilt and warranty.
