Just a follow up to the upper ball joint & sway bar link replacements:

The Jeep drives beautifully. No rattles, squeaks, or any other noises going down the road, hitting bumps, or taking corners. The last piece of this puzzle is getting an alignment, scheduled for next Friday. The Jeep’s alignment is off by a couple degrees on the steering wheel when driving straight. Not surprised as I had different brands of ball joints in the UCA’s before, when it was last aligned.

Had a few days off after my hospital fiasco...so FINALLY...started the utility box for the cargo area.(Have to take it easy for a while...LOL) I'll post pics when it is finished.
Also am waiting on only three parts for my complete suspension/lift.( new sway bar links and assorted bushings)
Determined that at 175k miles it is time to just replace all of it and be done with it as everything is either OE or the cheapo stuff I threw in for my trip. So close.
#6 is still flagging a MIL P0306 and P0300...so it looks like there is a bigger issue as now it does not auto reset and there is a noticeable rough idle. Investigation in progress.
My weld shop called this morning an said the front bumper would be done this week...called it an "...over engineered pain in the donkey..." but added it was a "very well designed piece of junk" Total weight is 86lbs without the steel winch plate and brackets. Looks like the total weight will bee around 110lbs with turn signals, amber fog lights and installed.
Haven't decided on a winch yet as I hate to spend big bucks one something I really don't need.

Hi All,

I posted this in the KK section but got no love, so I thought I’d ask here.

Now that the upper ball joints and sway bar links are fixed and quieted down, now I am hearing a random rattle, sort of like a rattling heat shield or something, from the passengers side. I can’t find any loose heat shields. The only thing that seems a bit loose is the right side CV shaft.

Is there supposed to be that much space between it and the differential housing (about 1 cm)? Thinking maybe it got pulled out a bit when I had the ball joint disconnected and what I am hearing could be play where it connects to the intermediate shaft or the diff itself. There is some movement when I shake the “can” of the CV - up/down, side to side, and in and out. Maybe 1/16” or so. The noise is definitely on this side, but doesn’t appear to be rotational and seems sort of random. I notice it only with the windows down, next to a barrier or parked cars that reflect the sound back at me. It happens only with the Jeep in motion, not idling at a stop.

Could someone take a peek under their KK and tell me if that much of a gap between the passengers side CV and diff housing is normal? Thanks!

Also, how much play should the “can” of the passengers side CV have? Thinking maybe worn out splines to the intermediate shaft might be an option too.

Edit: the CV boot on the transfer case end of the front driveshaft is intact. I wanted to put in this detail as it is a common failure point that causes noise, but it seems ok on mine.

Harbor Freight Badlands/Apex winches are pretty damn nice for the $. Some even come with synthetic lines now, IIRC.

Getting it aligned today. After the front suspension work the steering wheel was 5 or 10 degrees to the right when driving straight.

The evil emperess of which we do not speak is driving Bert whilst I repair the horribly designed cable based regulator on her Nissan’s driverside window.
She and her friends from Boston went mudding without me…

Also discovered all the stuff to convert the interior lights over to night-vision preserving Red and Blue LEDS arrived while I was away....so if the wife ever lets me have Bert back I am going to do that upgrade immediately. Even the stock weak bulbs are too bright and wreck my night vision. (This time of year I am out hunting newly adult tiger salamanders leaving their ponds to find burrows to make for the winter....lots of stop ad go driving after dark in the rain...)

or as the wife says "The Jeep is getting so tacticool, my followers love it..." <facepalm with groan of loathing>

Replaced my upper ball joints with new from JBAoffroad. The old ones were trashed and had like 1/8” of play.

The ride is unbelievably better now. It feels like a new Jeep.
How many miles did you have on those ball joints? Wondering if mine are due...

Far too many! 120K on one side, 80K on the other. Both were clunking around and had 1/8” of play once I removed them. Very unsafe to let them get that bad. Won’t be doing that again. If you can hear them, they are due, regardless of mileage.

Just in time for pre-hibernation reptiles and amphibians… Bert got ditch lights today. Next have to figure out where to mount the rear floods so they don’t interfere with the Roadhouse tarp…

Did you rebuild the JBA ball joints or replace with regular ones ? Thanks

Not gonna lie. I seen this on the website and I said *** is that ?? 10 minutes later I seen it for the 2nd time in my life on truck passing by.


Ps. You’re right. I googled fish rod bumper and up came a link to Amazon showing guess what ? A liberty haha
