I have an 04 Liberty 3.7L 4 wheel drive with about 150,000 miles. I have kept an eye on my levels and I am losing little more than a quart of oil every 1000-1500 miles. Because of this I top it off when it gets low and I change it between 2000-3000 miles using 5w30 synthetic. I park in my garage and I don't have any drips on the ground and it looks dry underneath. Not sure where the oil is going but any advice? Should I change the interval of oil changes or use a specific brand/type? I'm hesitant to use any additive that claims to stop leaks. Other than that engine seems to run fine.

welcome to the club.
time to start saving for a new engine.

Still within manufacturer specs. Or at them. About a quart per 1k.

Mine is going through some oil...although my front crank seal is weeping and my rear main is weeping. No drips on the ground yet. So I'm not sure how much is being burned vs how much is leaking.

I know this is old but who told you that? Seems like it's the same fluid.

02s came from the factory with a classic amber colored Mopar power steering fluid. After that they all came from the factory with that red ATF+4 in there. The Mopar PS fluid and the ATF+4 are not the same. You need to use all of one or the other and can switch from the PS fluid to ATF+4 after a complete flush (or visa versa). They shouldn't be mixed for the sake of the pump. The PO of mine mixed them and mine has had a bad whine when cold (<25F) since shortly after I bought it.

After reading this... I'm still a mite confused. With the Chrysler NSG370 transmission, which fluid should I use? I am also not a believer in lifetime fluid - but looking in the owners maunal was next to useless. in the FSM however, it specifically states "Mopar Manual Transmission Lubricant MS-9224", I have seen in this thread to use ATF +4, and I have also seen this:

"The following products are MS-9224 compliant:
• Chrysler synchomesh fluid #4874464
• Penzoil Synchromesh Fluid #18106
• Quakerstate Synchromesh Fluid #59634
• GM synchromesh fluid #12345349
• GM synchromesh fluid 12345577
• Havoline MTX fluid #1874

• The following manufacturers do NOT make a MS-9224 spec fluid:
• EVERYONE ELSE"

So - which is it? Are they are really the same thing? When I do a google search for Mopar Manual Transmission Lubricant MS-9224, I get pictures - but no links anywhere to buy it. Not even the usual Mopar online places.

So which is it?

Right. No syn or semi syn is required.
They only specify 6000 miles if your using plain mineral oil...Use fully synth and you can probably double the mileage between oil changes as it is a much longer lasting lubricant.

Have you checked your exhaust for blue-white smoke? That is a sure sign you are burning oil in the cylinders. And if that is happening then you either have a cracked head or block, a blown head gasket or your pistons rings are badly worn and letting too much oil past them. Petrol (Gasolene) engines are past their best after 100,000 miles and after 150,000 miles you are definitely looking at having to shell out on a new engine...Probably cheaper to simply buy another KJ with lower mileage.

For diesel only, half that for gas.

Not approved by Chrysler.

The 3.7 has a proven history outlasting the 2.8 CRD engine,in most cases by twice the mileage. There are some 3.7 KJ's out there with 400,000+ miles on them, have yet to see a CRD KJ make it much past 200k.

I know right?

Even if the 3.7 craps out if it's a newer KJ(not '02) your looking at $2000 for a reman engine and can have it installed the next day,$7000+ for a CRD engine and up to a 6 month wait if your lucky.

Probably because there are not as many CRD engines in the States as there are in the UK or Europe...You can get 2.8 CRD engines here from £500-£800 ($670
to $1000)...Cheaper than 3.7 gas guzzler engines, because fuel here is expensive so most people here buy cars with Diesel engines.

That is the price for a used engine, not a reman.Plus the prices are dropping over there big time since all diesels will be banned from most major cities in a few years.Nobody wants them anymore.

Again where are you getting this bad information ?
3.7s are not the best , but if maintained well you certainly don't have to rebuild / replace them every 100.000 miles
I have 3 well over that mileage guess I better start buying them new hearts real soon !:emotions34::emotions34::happy175:

Wrong, everybody here want's Diesels, it's the government that doesn't want us to have them! And they are only banning the sale of new Diesel cars from 2030 onwards. Besides, if the government scrappage scheme is anything like the one they had in France, I will end up with 8-10 thousand quid in my pocket to encourage me to swap to a low pollution vehicle, and I only paid less than 3 grand for my KJ...It's a win win situation!
