Jeep 2.5crd. 2002.

Hi all.

I have a 2.5crd. That will tick over fine at 800rpm sounds a bit lumpy. But as soon as I accelerate it revs to 2000rpm and cuts out. Also smoking white from exhaust. . Any ideas please.

Hi all.

White smoke means water in fuel mixture ie. blown head gasket while black smoke is usually a hole in one of the turbo hoses.

Remove the fuel filter housing and check that the hose going to the turbo is not split and is on firmly...check the turbo does not have too much end play or sideways play.

Remove the CAC hoses ie. the hoses going from turbo to the intercooler and then to the intake manifold and check these hoses are tight and have no holes or splits in them...make note of the alignment marks on these hoses if they are the OEM replacements.

Remove the MAP sensor on the top of the intake manifold..near to the rear of the engine under a wiring harness that can be shifted aside. On the 2.5 Export CRD this sensor is held in place by two small Allen Head bolts...later models and USA CRDs have the MAP sensor held in place by a single large bolt.

This MAP sensor is very delicate so do not touch it or use a hard brush on it....best to spray it clean with Brake Cleaner.

Check that the airfilter is clean and the fuel filter is clean and that there is no air in the fuel head.

The procedure to bleed air out of the filter head...a good Raycor unit... is described in the documentation linked below but they miss out one step.

Basically unscrew the white plastic screw on top of the filter head and lift it up....use a coin to unscrew it.
Now pump this plunger that you now have very hard until it gets very firm.

Now loosen the 10 mm brass bolt on the side of the filter head briefly to let air out...this step is left out in the manual. Tighten the brass bolt and repeat the procedure a few times.

You can pull codes out of the pre 2005 KJs by the "key" method.

Turn the ignition ON/OFF rapidly 4 times without starting the engine.
After the 4th ON action leave the ignition turned ON.

The Odometer Display will display the codes one at the time from the oldest...may no longer be relevant...to the newest. Make a note of these codes....the last one is most relevant. The codes are only logged once so even if you have multiple occurances of the same code it will only show once.
These codes extracted this way sometimes transpose the last two digits ie. a code of P0512 may display as P0521 which confuses matters. Fuel problems do not normally store codes and the codes are never erased using this method.

Try to get some codes using this method....some say the key must be turned ON/OFF 3 or 5 times but 4 times definitely works for me every time...must be done rapidly!
I have deliberately caused an error by pulling out one of the Glow Plug Relays under the bonnet. The engine starts but a bit roughly and posts a code. I now use this code as a "marker" so that I know that any code that displays after this "marker" is a newly posted code!

Download the 2002 KJ Service Manual here...includes wiring diagrams but for the Export 2.5/2.8 engine first download the section "2.5_2.8 export_diesel".
