Contemplating between 2 KJs, need your help to decide:

First:
2003 Jeep liberty sport 4x4, blue
  • Upgrades: Elec. Sunroof, tow hitch
  • All systems are stock.
  • smog till Sep
  • Title clean, good maintenance record
  • 115k miles
  • 2 owners total, not driven off road
  • Test driven - feels fine except for alignment needed (pulls right)

Second:
2006 Jeep Liberty limited 4x4, beige
  • no upgrades
  • All systems are stock.
  • smog till May (soon)
  • Title clean, interior missing mats (no big deal), no maintenance record to speak of, owner says he did all oil changes etc himself
  • 80k miles
  • 2 owners as well, not driven off road
  • not test driven yet (soon)

both will sell for ~5400$ give or take..

What would YOU do?
Thanks!

which transmission is on the 2003? 42rle or 45rfe?

no idea, didn't even know there were two options (what's the diff?) - all is stock so I assume whatever came in 2003.

EDIT:
OK, just searched and learnt about it. It depends when was the car built.
Can I know it from the VIN?
I might possibly be able to call the 03' owner and ask him to do some simple check for me (that does not involve crawling under the car and counting screws). Is there such a way?

could get a build sheet from the dealership with the VIN

How do I do that? How long does it take?

I'm assuming your final answer is:
if the 03' got the 45rfe ****** get it otherwise get the 06'?

EDIT:
I just checked this website put in the 03' VIN and got
car was built October 24, 2002 as a 2003 model year.

Can we safely assume it has the 45rfe?

I'd get whichever appeals more to you. I've seen Libby's with less miles have more problems than those with more. Just my input

Assuming it drives fine, I'd probably go for the '06. Less miles + 3 years newer + Limited = higher value. As far as the hitch, any dealer will install one for no charge under the recall.

Since I don't like anything above 05 of course I'd go for the 03, but all depends on how each feels to you , and you only

If the 2003 has a 45RFE I would go with the 2003! At time I wish my liberty had the 45RFE because I could use it when I am towing a a 500 pound trailer load around town and on the highway!

I think you can safely assume it has the 45rfe but of course visually verify that. My 03 was built in 03 but fortunately it was early enough to have the 45rfe.

I think the 06 and up have the drive by wire which i don't like.

I think I would pick which ever one was better maintained and in better condition, engine and ****** but I'm leaning towards the 03.

The 03 seems to have better features. Does it have an EVIC too?
