Odd, I run a shop, do dozens of oil changes weekly, and use the cheapest filter (not necessarily the sorriest) and oil I keep in stock in my personal Chevy Silverado SS. That's a Chinese made filter, "ProGauge", and Phillips66 semi synthetic oil. Trucks got 242,*** miles and is always full at 3,500 mile change time (that is if I don't go over 4k because of neglect). This is a high output, premium fuel only 6L engine I run the azz of of.

But go ahead and pay for the name brands and all their advertising if it makes you feel better.

Well when I can crush a filter with my bare hands, the filter gasket falls off, and the fact that they straight up explode or expand within the 3k OCI, I refuse to use that garbage. Go ahead and keep using em if you want but I sure as hell won't trust my vehicle with anything from chinkyland.

PS: I'm also a certified technician and see these things on the regular

Such wisdom from one so young!

I can crush a beer can with my bare hands (after it's empty, at least). Never seen that as a reason to quit drinking beer.

Such rudeness from someone so old.

Empty beer cans and oil filters aren't even as close as apples and oranges - and you know it.

I Normally Stock up on Mobile 1 (i Use it for my Evo) So i could just stick with using Mobile products if a lot of you have had good luck with them. I've been considering trying out the Castrol GTX as well, seems like a lot of you use that as well.

And just because you "run" a shop and are older than me doesn't mean anything. A well built oil filter will not crush like your cheap ass ***** ones. Ever here of the countless JiffyLube filter problems from running inferior china made filters?

Mobil is g2g stuff. If you run that in your engine when it's brand new it'll keep it that way.

You may be right. It's been a long time since I was "young" enough to not realize how little I know.

UUummmm,,, no, JiffyLube not much of a player here in the South. WalMart and their wonderful Made In USA Frams seem to fill that market.

LeeAnn, when the young pups with their spanking new, shiny certifications tell me how an automotive enterprise that's been under the same management, in the same location, serving up to 4 generations of the same families is doing it wrong, yes I do tend to get a bit cranky.

LOL Walmart. I'll never ever get my vehicle serviced at a place I can buy my groceries at. Don't get me wrong though, a lot of us techs are merely professional parts hangers, right? :happy175: Been certified for almost 8 years now, passed my first tests when I was still in my tech classes during high school. I don't think I'm doing too bad having been certified for almost a decade now. I'll tell ya what really gets me, is when some old dog thinks that because he's been sittin' on the porch for so long that he's the only one allowed to piss on the grass!

Ahhhh...... no, you need to change oil in these engines or they will sludge up and die....

Here is a link where you can see the result of neglected oil changes:

My sludge death thread

Pretty cool looking at the pics of your rebuild!!! I haven't built an engine in about 25 years and was a little jealous reading your thread. Gonna make sure to do lots of oil changes on the new huntcamp beater.

Just did mine last weekend with Quaker State Full Synthetic 5W-20 and a Mopar filter. The old oil (not done by me) had 4,000 miles on it, longest I've ever gone on the same oil for any car I've ever owned. It was full synthetic as well and was rated for 7,500 miles. It was also black as ink when I drained it out. I've been checking the new oil every day this week and am enjoying the nice honey-bronze color. I may be wasting money by doing it ahead of schedule, but it's still cheaper than a new engine.

I didnt know this was about who knows more or who is old and who is young i think we can all agree that leaving any oil in the there for months on end is not good for any engine i could not imagine leaving my oil in there for 6 months. To the OP check the levels regularly and use your head these engine are known to consume oil. I change mine often enough to keep it clean if you want to run dirty oil run it. Thats not my thing. Castrol Mobile1 is what it is once its dirty its all shit.

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
Gotta love oil threads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has oil come along way in the last 20 years? Yep

Can you run it longer then 3k? Yep

Should you run it longer then 3k? Nope

Why?

Cause over complicated emission systems and "thin" oil(that would be 5w-20 and thinner) lead to oil consumption. Also newer engines run much hotter then older engines.

Call me young and inexperienced but been in the field and Master certified for almost 20 years now.I'm not a mechanic,I'm a technician and yes there is a major difference.I don't even got 1000 miles sometimes on my oil changes,I do mine by time now, every 6 months(average 2k in that time on both my vehicles).I use Vavoline 5w-30 non-syn in my KJ now with Mobil 1 filter and Mobil 1 syn 5w-30 in the Town Car with Mobil 1 filter.

Here is your extended OCI's(10k OCI's and 100k on engine) using Castrol GTX and Fram oil filters, and no the intake gaskets were not leaking, engine was torn down due to 3qts of oil added brought the oil level to "full".

Steve, why 5W-20, or did you mean 5W-30?:hmm:

The newer models run 5w20 and it is suggested to use the thinnest oil you can without consuming or vice versa run a heavier oil until the consumption slows enough to maintain. I run 10w30 in the summer and 5w30 in winter.I used to consume like a quart every 1000 miles. Not so much any more. Funny story but i dont suggest doing what i did to anyone. Dropped my trans pan and instead of putting 5 quarts atf to the trans i put it in my engine oil. Dont do that but it dis help my consumption.

07+ 3.7s spec 5W20 for an alleged .0000003 better MPG. My 09 WK 3.7 speced it too but I use 5W30 in it, no issues since that's what the engine was originally designed for.

Wow, that's worse than the 1.8t VW motor i worked on (i though that was pretty bad haha). The previous owner i purchased my Renegade from just switched out the motor because the last one blew from a sludge/oil deprivation issue. New motor has 56k on it, and i want to make sure that doesn't happen again (hence the reason i started this thread). Wanted to know what has worked best for everyone on keeping these engines alive and healthy.
