You can also just finger tighten the lug nuts on your wheels and you'll run down the road for a while, maybe a few days or a few weeks depending on how much you drive, but would you tell people to do that ?

I believe that you should build a vehicle as safely as you can and also build it so if you have to go on a 2500 mile trip tomorrow its ready to go. I drove mine for a short while with 265-75s and stock gearing and it suc ked BIG time . Couldn't wait to get the gearing done. So for me I will never suggest that you can run long term like that

Please...we're not even in the same ballpark when talking about safety.

To the OP....here's what I suggest. You know you'll want to run 265's regardless if you regear or not. Go ahead and budget for the full upgrade, gears and all. Put the 265's on and you be the judge whether you need the gears or not. I'm pretty sure you can be the best judge of what works for you. Regardless of the threats of massive catastrophe and alien invasions by others, your Jeep will run just fine either way you decide. smh

I started this Thread.
First off my Libby is 2wd for now.
And my question was about the transmission handling LT265/75R16 I will be changing my ring and pinion set to 4:10 or 4.56 maybe even 4.88? But it is not going to happen for a few months.
Question: the Liberty 3.7 has plenty of power to push 265/75R16 or 275/70R16 even though re-gearing it is preferred and I know I will lose some power.
Is it the transmission cannot handle it? Or the shifting points get thrown off?

Somewhere between being sane and insane!

They will be thrown way off and constantly hunting for gears on the smallest incline. That creates more heat in the trans which the stock cooler setup in KJ's with the 42RLE trans can not handle for long.If your '03 has the 45RFE it will handle the extra heat better but you will need to change the trans fluid more often as that extra heat will will degrade the ATF+4 much faster.

The extra weight of a 265/75 also is a huge factor, not just on the trans but the brakes as almost all of them are load range D or E tires.Very hard to find any tire worth a damn in that size that is not a 8-10 ply tire.

I ran the 35s on my truck for about month before re gearing. It did suck but it lived.
And I am running EBC breaks on it as well.

The libby will be no deferent, we are going with the 4.88 if the 265/75R16 fit with the 3.5” lift. We will see.
I was planning on replacing the rotors and pads with EBC.

Thank you for your help. I will post photos soon.

You can't go 4.88s in a Libby... You'd need the steel front diff from JBA for about $1500
