04-05 KJ rear Control Arms Recall Coming...

Well considering the Buick's undercarriage is 95% aluminum that is no surprise there for lack of rust.The Toyota is most likely due to massive oil leaks as the echo's oil pans are very well known for leaking.

Oil? Not a single trace under the Echo and I did all the maintenance on every car in my yard and NONE of the trucks I own got undercarriage rust NONE! Only the Buick got rear undercarriage aluminium parts , all others GM, Ford, Dodge, Plymouth, Honda, Toyota, Mazda and VW I owned got steel. I made a mistake about the Jeep poor quality rust protection it's only the "SECOND" worse the first one was my Diesel Isuzu TrooperII...

Salt bath Tom? 0 degrees? You kidding? At this temp I get out in T-Shirt to wash my deck! I'm talking MINUS 20F and lower here! Have you ever see brown salted ice hard as steel sticking under your truck and try to remove it at -20F? This is every day normal issue here and fracking small rock and sand mix they use on slippy road this shi..sandblast everything. You can compare those conditions to what you ever experience in MID USA ask some North folk's on the forum, some of them are friends and got rust under there KJ too. We are all over 50 (One is 68) 4 of us are engineers and we all know how to use a pressure washer.

Blame your "goobernement" if you want but here the law is clear, they have to give support for issue for 10 years! The only reason why I don't get rid of my Diesel KJ it's because there is nothing new on the market arround $40K to replace it for the moment except fracking big diesel pickup truck.

Actually no they don't since that Chrysler no longer is a company that made KJ's so they can stop all support at anytime with not breaking any laws.

Now my KJ has been is salt belt states and yes here in CO they use soduim chloride.Where is the rust? Heck the 2 year old shock is rusty but not any OEM part.Not to mention it's 2-3 years older then any KJ involved in the recall.


Don't fancy your toyota's,as every single toyota pickup/suv has a recall for frame rot with proof that junk metal was used in production.Don't get me started about the fj loser and what a death trap that is.

The answer is simple. This website is a very, VERY small percentage of Liberty owners *and* some, read: MOST are inactive or have possibly sold their Liberty. People on forums come and go.

... and then there are those of us who can't stay away from the site or a Liberty even if they've tried... once... or twice. That would be me. :)

... also... as enthusiasts, we have a tendency to take care of our vehicles MUCH better than the average Joe or Jane. We might wash our Jeeps once per week, or more often, but Joe or Jane might wash once per month.

True fact right there. I had a "For Sale" sign on my Jeep for quite a little while. I couldn't do it...

Ok I got my new control arms yesterday.

There is one fundamental difference that everyone isn't putting into the equation. Here is a pic showing my old arms:

Now here's my new ones after I doused them with black rustoleum. These are NOT going to rust.

Now, my new ones, they look like tjkj's that he had. They are completely different than these old ones they replaced. You can see the welds already rusting on the old pic. My undercarriage is pretty clean. I really only have rust on the muffler, drive shaft and suspension components up front. The tri-link on mine has a little rust, but it isn't really that bad at all.

So, maybe it is just this other design that they thought they may be having problems with. Just a thought.

one thing I didn't mention is that they replaced the bolts that hold the sway bar too.

When I was doing research when I first heard about the recall, I found there were two different LCAs. The larger ones are listed as 02-03, and the smaller ones are listed as 04-07. That's according to Jeep 4x4 Center

Not sure how accurate that is though, because I have an 04 and mine came with the larger ones, and they were replaced with the larger ones when the recall work was done.

Known that for years now, I've had both kinds on mine earler set and later
Mine came with the later smaller ones which never rusted at all ( of course some people think Ohio never gets cold nor do they salt the roads) :happy175::happy175::happy175::happy175::happy175::happy175:

Good point! I'm sure now that everyone gets my point and that obviously these will hold up a lot better.

And Tom, yes. Bushings are/were the main thing on my mind the whole time while doing this.

Yeah, exactly.
They can deny recall work due to mods.Will they? In most cases no they will not but they do have the right to.


No recall applies to my KJ anymore and have the letter from Chrysler as my KJ is labeled as "excessively modified",basically they consider my KJ as a salvaged title vehicle in which recalls do not apply.

Rear Lower Control Arms were just replaced in the KJ, per recall.

I'll look at it tomorrow to check it out. Supposedly sister had recently developed a clunk in the rear end which I have yet to check out.

Maybe she got lucky and this fixed it? :p

Chrysler is recalling 209,724 2004-'05 Jeep Libertys in cold-weather states because a rear suspension lower control arm could fracture, according to NHTSA.
Apparently Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and North/South Dakota are now considered "Tropical States"...(banghead)
Damn you Al Gore and your global warming....

Tri link I bet. I'm about due for one too. Mine clunks backing out of driveway.

Mine got done today. 45 minutes. No big deal. It kind of feels taller in the rear end now, but I think it's just a placebo effect... ya know, I feel it because I know it change sort of thing.
