i am planning on installing a 7-pin trailer adapter to my '05 jeep liberty but am having a tough time finding a position for it. the bumper is plastic and there is no framing around the area that allows for a sturdy position or easy access to adapter. if there is anybody that has any ideas/photos of where to install this adapter it would be much appreciated.

Couple of questions first:

- Are you using the Mopar harness? If so it comes with the screws, washers, etc. to install the 7-pin into the hitch's wiring box (if you use a factory hitch.) My suggestion is to use the factory harness - installs easily and works every time. Look in the How-To section for a great (and long) thread on installing the factory harness.

- I'm assuming you're using an aftermarket hitch since you're asking about a location for a harness box. Have you considered looking for a factory hitch from a salvage yard or online source? Try LKQ Online or Car-Parts.com for a hitch for an '02-'07 Liberty. I got mine from LKQ for $65 and it was in great shape. Had to purchase the appropriate bolts and washers separately (from my local Fastenal supplier) but it bolted right up. Added the factory harness and it is perfect.

If you're going totally aftermarket try etrailer.com. They have everything towing related.

Hope this helps.

Lets think about this, plastic bumper, easy to cut...
mmmmmm maybe a hole cut right in the bumper and mounted right there above the hitch , better than lower where it may get caught on something

i have an aftermarket curt hitch and an aftermarket adapter from etrailer. i looked at etrailers videos and articles and found nothing that would solve this dilemma. looks like i will to fabricate something to attach to the frame and then attach the adapter to that.

If you got the square tube Curt hitch and not the round tube you should be able to use an attachment point right on the hitch itself. That's where the factory harness box is - just to the left of the receiver. Like this:

You must be registered for see images

Here's a page full of boxes and brackets for holding your plug. Should be able to find something there that will help.

Take pics of what you do so that others will be able to see how to add a hitch and wiring to their Jeeps.

Hope this helps...

As shown on that link - some can attach with a hose clamp.

If you have a local trailer shop, or even a U-Haul shop, they should have something in stock.

Tractor Supply also has some stuff in stock.

Anyone have the part number for the 7 pin harness? I would like to upgrade mine, but there are two part numbers online.

Anyone have the part number for the 7 pin harness? I would like to upgrade mine, but there are two part numbers online.

For a full explanation of 'why...' look at the How-To section for the reasons for a couple of different parts for the factory 7-pin harness.

On the jparts.com website there are two parts noted: Part #L82207248AB is the 7-pin harness itself. Part #L82207620AB is a supplemental harness you'll need if you DO NOT have a factory-installed EVIC overhead console. In my case I didn't have the EVIC so I bought both. Scroll about 2/3 of the way down the page to find them. Their prices are pretty good, though you might find an online Mopar dealer selling them for less.

The secondary harness is required to run 12-volt power to the 7-pin for use with trailers that need power for accessories on the trailer. You'll also need the 7-pin if you ever want to install a brake controller to operate the electric brakes on a trailer.

If you don't think you'll ever need trailer brakes or the other advantages that come with a 7-pin get a 4-flat harness. The jparts.com site has them, Part #L82207290AB. You don't need the supplemental harness with the 4-flat.

Again, for a full overview check out the trailer harness/wiring How-To for detailed instructions.
