Got my jeep back frmo the garage last week after some new front brake and oil change.
But, the guy told me that I would have to change all my wheel nut because chrysler have a known issue of rust on the inside thread of these. Personally I never saw that before and I'm not 100% sure it's true.
Any one here already heard of that?
Personally I think the factory nut are good looking on the factory wheel so I want to keep them :)

Mines been on for 177,000 miles, I rotate my tires every 4000 miles or so plus however many times I've had them off for other things.
No rust to date on mine

The OE nuts do rust and can come apart (the chrome part is just a cap), usually at the worst time (ask me how I know... lol) if you do not keep them clean (inside) ... like Tom does.

wow that sentence was much more fluid in my head :happy175:

If you have the $ I would (and did) change mine for McGaurds. They look much better and are guaranteed for life.

P.S. Welcome and congrats on your KJ!

Then I guess I'm gonna change them. I have an appointment to put my winter tire on the 26 ( they are mandatory in quebec ) I'll just ask the guy to put 19 new nut. Yes I know the right number is 23 with the spare but I subtracted the locknut. The car came without them so I bought new one with the tire.

Thx

on here
My lugs have been on for 7 years and no problems and I am in the Upstate NY part of the rust belt. Replace them with solid ones if you need to but if not..........why bother.

Regarding the McGuards, I have a set and had them on the wheels but they are a PIA so now I have 3 of them on my spare and that still gave me 3 extra lug nuts in case I break the chrome cap off of one or something........haha They are still a PIA though.

I replaced mine, after 2 came apart. But just a couple of weeks ago my Uncle ( haven't seen in 8 years) stopped in.
He worked for a Chrysler Jeep dealer that closed. I was working on the KK getting ready to rotate tires. He looks at my lugs and said get those off. Put stock back on. I scraped them. He sent my a box of OEM lugs. Claims the surface of wheel is machined to the match the surface area of lugs.
And that aftermarkets aren't. Claims dealership had to replace rims Because of cracks around lug nuts. Again this is what he claims he dealt with a dealership. I did notice that the replacement lugs had less surface, but the shape was the same. I haven't changed to the once he sent me, yet.
I will because the chrome ones are rusting, and not even been in salt yet. Oh and he said do not use an impact ever.

Lol, impact for anything that screw make me laugh all the time. As an electrician I see so many people stripping screw head using impact or breaking outlet screwing with that. Butthen, if you have a impact that is calibrated to a precise force I don;t see what could be wrong.
Not to mention that probably 50% of people that want to use impact for the job and don;t know tools use a hammer drill...that's a shame XD

I don't mean McGaurd locking lug nuts ... I mean replacement lug nuts, they are solid one piece units not chrome covered.

like this :D My Jeep can be covered in dirt but strangely they still shine ..lol

Well since McGard makes most of the lugnuts for OEM's I'd call that claim as false.I've been running McGard lugnuts for 20 years on 40+ vehicles with zero issues on stock and aftermarket rims.

For the impact comments your going to be hard pressed to find a shop that will not use a impact. The last customer that did not want us to use a impact on his lugnuts was told to rotate his own tires then.Sorry I get paid 6mins to rotate your tires,it will be done the fastest way possible and still be done right.

The only vehicles we will not use a impact on are those land rovers with those 28mm lugnuts which are actually locking nuts and easily damaged, also $35 each, but we don't see many of those here.

I don't know if my replacements are McGard never mentioned them. My replacements are from a bulk box at auto parts store one dollar a piece. Also never said a shop or you had to rotate my tires, I can and do myself. And I have worked at an auto body and auto mechanic shops and some customers did ask for no impacts, and none were used on them. We tried to keep our customers happy and liked to have return business. So right there I know of 2 shops that will. The comments were not mine I stated what I was told, and by who. Why would he claim that the dealership had to replace wheels because of cracks on rims that customers changed lugs on?Nobody made money on that.I have used McGard on my other trucks, and actual have a set of locks from my 1985 pickup. I was given OEM which may or may not be McGard to replace my one dollar lugs, which may or may not be McGard. So I guess it's good to be me free OEM lugs which may or may not be McGard.

I know that, and that's why I didn't said never use it on a car. Personally I think that using them on a car is nothing wrong, just don't use one with to much torque on it so you are gonna break something. Or maybe it's the pressure on the compressor that control the thing? I don't know I'm no where close to be a mechanic :p My comment was refering more for day to day use of impact. For exemple, went on a call few week ago in a small factory to repair a 50HP 600V engine, there was a guy fixing some cantrust on the wall with HKD fixture ( I may use term that are used only here in quebec ) and he was using an impact to pierce the concrete instead of an hammer drill, no need to say it was damn long to pierce a single hole.

Maybe we understand each other better now ;)

Btw thx guy for reply and info, I think I'm gonna put a little on the table and change all the nut. Hope my garage have some sexy looking one in stock :)
