What is the chance both CV's are bad?

I have play in both of the CV joints on the part near the diff/intermediate shaft. So what is the chance they are both due for replacing? Or am I check the wrong thing for play?

I am just almost at 98k with mine and they are fine but it is possible but very unlikely at your miliage. Mine were giving me a fit when I bought it because they were binding the opposite way because of the sagged suspension. I was at 17 on all fender flares.

The angle on mine is fine I think, just about 2" above stock. I jacked up the front, I'll record the noise in a bit.

Would that be more of a grinding noise?

I'm going to go record the noise.

I got the vid. It's jacked up, you can hear a bit of clunking. That cylinder thing I pointed to, when on the ground it has play, both sides. Like LibertyTC's vid.

Thanks for the help!

There isn't any evidence of grease leaking anywhere though. In that case though, would I need to replace all the CV's?

Alrighty. Today it made no noise so maybe it's in my head and I'm only thinking I'm hearing because now I'm paranoid. I'm going to see if it gets louder. Thanks again

The driver's side sounds like a bad CV - as you rocked the wheel back & forth there was "slop" that seems to indicate wear on that side. Usually the passenger side CV and intermediate shaft exhibit those symptoms.

If you replaced both CV's with remans from NAPA and the intermediate shaft you'd be at about $230 if you do the work yourself. Not bad for 100K miles.

By the way - you keep your Libby's underside CLEAN! I'm pretty meticulous but good golly man yours looks practically new!:party52:

How did the passenger side sound to you? Just to make sure we're clear, the first part was the passenger then last was driver. :)

Thanks...I try to keep it looking new. Clevis needs to be painted...

The first part of the vid - the passenger side - didn't seem to have any slop. That's what seems a little peculiar - usually that's the side that goes first. Maybe do the driver's side for now (it's the easier side cuz you don't have to deal w/ the intermediate shaft) and see if that clears it up. My local NAPA charged $53 for that side after the core charge refund so it's a pretty inexpensive fix. Cost me more for a Jeep badge for the hood! :disgust:

BTW, what paint do you use for the underside?

No noise today so far...even did some mild off roading and some tight low speed turns.

I use Rustoleum Black High Gloss. A thin coat gets you the look. :D

If your gonna replace CV joints then you may as well do both sides at the same time.
When we re-geared the drivers side was shot and the passengers side had a little play but not as much as yours, however the intermediate shaft was toast.
For piece of mind both sides were replaced.
Better safe than sorry, especially when off road.

That's about what it sounds like when I turn. I'm thinking I need to replace the passenger CV as well. Don't really know how to do it though, so I'm holding off until after I rebuild the ******...

...and get new tires...

...and new brakes all around...
