Looked under the hood to see if there was a simple and obvious reason for why the cruise control didn’t work. I saw that the vacuum line to the unit had broken in two. Found one at the local junk yard for the price of admission, $1, and now it works again. I wish the noise in the rear end was that easy and cheap.

Rear differential work is a bit to master, so if you're going to take the time to learn it right, it's almost worth getting all the tools you need and just specialize in them. Because nobody wants to do it and if you got a reputation for doing it right, it'd generate $500 a job probably as a nice side hustle. If you're gonna do one, you can do every other one in the area. I was a mechanic through the 90s and 2000s and I hated differential work and was terrible with it. So much that I farmed it out to a guy who just did differentials.

Simple fix for vacuum lines... Marine grade heat shrink. It has a glue inside of it. I have "temporary fixes" that are still working. I made those fixes in 1995.....
